Electric Water Pump Trouble... Wiring?

What could cause the electric water pump to smoke? Followed this schematic except we wired it to a constant wire.

1. A bad water pump motor.
2. Running it without coolant. On my Meziere the instructions say to fill the system with coolant before applying power to the water pump. The coolant must provide some lubrication.

Re: Electric Water Pump Trouble... Wiring?

I took the pump off a little bit ago and it seems the impeller blades are rubbing/grinding on the inside of the housing I am going to call CSR tomorrow morning... maybe they sent me the wrong model?

Re: Electric Water Pump Trouble... Wiring?

I was told by Jason that since the water pump housings are 'castings' they all differ. He said that he has about 16 pump housings that he measured and went off of, and all of them were different from each other by a little bit. I will probably just grind down the blades on the impeller slightly, rather than take the entire housing off again. He told me that it wouldn't void the warranty if I had to do that.

Re: Electric Water Pump Trouble... Wiring?

Ok, grinding the blades didn't help me at all. When I put the pump into the housing and turn it on (with no coolant), it runs perfectly. When I add coolant to the housing, the fuse blows. I just got done taking the pump back off and the impeller came out I talked to CSR and I will most likely be shipping it back to them to get it checked out/fixed. I wish it was just the wiring hehe.....

Re: Electric Water Pump Trouble... Wiring?

the blade is put on so that it can run eather forward or reverse. I talked to CSR and they say that they run the LT1 pumps in reverse from the factory (just look at how they switch the wires through the attached harness) for our reverse flow cooling...they just flow better that way. it seems that with a few of the pumps they didnt tighten the impellar down enough and thats forcing them to come off under a load (the coolant).

when you tightened the blade back down all you really did was pull it closer to the housing. we cant tighten them ourselves because the pump has to be disassembled to do so...and they are concealed pumps.
