Electric water pump ???

Would an electric water pump get damaged if you run the cooling system without water or coolant?

Thanks,

Why are you asking??? Are you thinking about doing this or did this accidentally happen by some means???

I don't think it'll hurt it at all, when I installed mine, I started the Meziere motor up before putting it on the car to make sure that I had my wiring right.

I wouldn't think it would hurt it. Unless the pump uses coolant for lubing the seal. Regardless I wouldn't chance it.

Well my CSI quit on me today and I notice I had low coolant in the car, but the low coolant light did not come on.

I put the key in the on position and I didn't here the water pump turn on. I check the fuse and relay and they both have power.

This is the second time this has happend. I shipped back the first one to get it fixed. Lucky I have that as a spare.

I would think this would be very unhealthy for the pump. The coolant does act as a lube. Furthermore, without any load I'm sure the pump spins much faster than it was designed for.

I could see where extended usage without coolant could easily damage it. However, I'd be more worried about the engine at that point.

Thanks guys,

Another question that was brought up. Since coolant is slick and I'm assuming it lube the seal, could I run straight water with water wetter instead of coolant when I replace the wp?

The coolant does several functions. It acts as a buffer to prevent corrosion, especially in iron block, aluminum headed engines. It lubricates and also prevents freezing.

There are people who run just water with water wetter but unless you are having cooling problems I really wouldn't want to. Running 70 water/30 coolant with some water wetter is about perfect if you aren't ever expecting cold weather.

All IMO of course
