elec water pump warning light

im looking at installing an elec water pump when i do my cam install so i dont have to get the lt4 timing chain and maybe free up alittle power. i have been reading about alot of people trying to wire up a warning system to let them know if the pump has failed and im wondering why people arent just using the autometer warning lite the sell in the summit catalog? am i missing something as to why it wont work or is there another reason people are looking for a warning system that this light wont work for?

Re: elec water pump warning light

As long as the autometer light is a simple 12volt bulb it should work in that diagram. But that schematic shows the light in parallel with the pump. That will tell you only if the voltage source goes away. Not whether the pump is actually working or not. It would make more sense to wire a led in series with the motor. When current flows, the led lights. When the pump draws current, the led lights. The other way only lights when the pump has power going to it but it doesn't mean the pump is working.

I'm not a fan of electric water pumps so I wasn't aware that people needed a light to indicate the pump had failed. It's easy with a diode. Let me know how I can help.

I build the curcuit and it worked fine...I just did a crappy job of soldering and now I get feed back through my buzzer.
I might just get 94Sleeper to build me one.

Hope that helps.

Warning lights are silly. If it dies, it dies, and your SOL regardless of whether you have a warning light or not. They're not quiet running, so it should be obvious if its working or not once your temp skyrockets. Just my opinion.

Trust me, it would help when you have a loud exhaust. I can't hear it when my car is running. I constantly watch my temperature gauge now that it is installed.

But when your car is off, and the power is on, the pump should be running. Obviously your not going to troubleshoot an overheating problem with your car running.

Re: elec water pump warning light

The reason noone uses an autometer one is that it's like $40 where a regular light from autozone is about $3. I mounted mine on the A pillar and it has saved my *** a couple of times since I don't drive watching the temp guage al the time. I prefer to keep my eyes on the road.

When you install the light, make your power on connection to the water pump on the WATER PUMP side of the connector. That way if the connector comes loose, you will know. With it on the wiring side of the connection, the pump wcould be unplugged, but the power wouldn't be getting past the open connection

sorry guys im bad with wiring but is there a way to wire the warning light so that it can uses the temp sending unit and wire it up to light if it loses power as well. that way one light will alert me of two probs. i like the autometer light because it will fit on my tach under the shiftlight.

Re: elec water pump warning light

Yes there is.

The key will be the sensor that will have to be used to illuminate the light if the temperature is too high. Finding just the right temp. may not be easy. The switch I have in mind will go to ground at a given temperature. This combined with one more relay will provide 2 ways to ground the light and have it come on. One way will ground the light when temp gets too high. The other will turn it on if power drops out to the pump.

The switch I use for my low temp primary fan will work but the temp is too low. If you can find a higher temp switch, we can do just what you want.

Re: elec water pump warning light

Here's a drawing I whipped up real quick on paint. Sorry for the crappy quality.

http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/518431/3

The sensor my fans use closes at 195 deg. Here's one that will work at 195

Don't pay attention to the year it's for. You won't be hooking up to the harness or the fans. You just want the switch from the kit and it won't have the harness in the picture either. That's just an approximation of the kit. The actual kit is on Summit but I couldn't link directly to the page. It's part number jet-60600 there.

I wouldnt trust a goofy light... the major flaw with it is that you must be watching the light at all times to notice it. That is hard to do when your eyes are on the road. Instead wire in an audible buzzer or if you really want some security you could wire in the ignition thru the waterpump that way if the pump dies it will shut the car off with it.

slopokrodrigez thanks for all this help your really seem to know your stuff! im not sure if i understand how the jet fan switch can be connected to this? (i thought that that would just connect to the fan to turn the fans on?)also it doesnt have the lt1 listed will it still work?
