EGR Feed Pipe with headers, and the AIR system
EGR Feed Pipe with headers, and the AIR system
Well, PA put a mandatory visual inspection of emissions equipment, at least in the harrisburg area, so I could use some help...
1. EGR Feed pipe, used to go to the exhaust manifolds....do LT1 headers come with a place to plug the feed pipe into? I've got the SLP 1 3/4" headers ceramic coated, I'd rather not drill into them...but if I must...any ideas on other easier ways to do it?
2. AIR system, first off, I assume if my air pump violantly kills 20A fuses that it is dead, not that it matters since I only need a visual check, but I figured I'd see if this was a common problem or not (Since I Have to have the systems hooked up, I might as well make them functional I suppose...) But whats really bugging me is the AIR line from the catylitic converter, is that supposed to plug in??? I got the 2 headers plugged in, but not the cat. Is it just supposed to T off from one of the header hoses?
Thanks, I hope to have my car back next weekend after not driving it most of the summer

Re: EGR Feed Pipe with headers, and the AIR system
If the headers were of the emissions legal variety, they would have a place to attach the EGR feed pipe.
There is no AIR connection directly to the cat, just the two valves that would go on the exhaust manifolds (headers, in your case).

Re: EGR Feed Pipe with headers, and the AIR system
Well they are emission legal headers.....just they are for a Thirdgen as my car is an 87, and I just bolted up the old headers to the LT1.....so I take it that means I gotta find a place to drill...do you think down on the Y-Pipe would be too low? Obviously I would need to extend the metal pipe to fit, but does the EGR need high temps from the headers, or would slightly cooler gas from the Y-Pipe do?
As for the cat, are you saying I should have left the plug on the AIR line on the cat? Or should it be tapped in somewhere. If I understand you correctly, you are syaing it should just be plugged, which makes life simpler and I like that option
Thanks

Re: EGR Feed Pipe with headers, and the AIR system
So I went to tell my brother what I found out here, and that left myself wondering.....I have 1 line coming up from my exhaust, from the CAT as an AIR line, and have another metal pipe that is the EGR feed tube. Anyone know if the AIR line in the cat is before or after the catylist? If it is before, knowing what I know about EGR, I would guess there is no problem using that as an EGR feed. If it is after, I seem to recall one of the converters outputs being water, and I wouldnt want that in the engine
Of course I could always cheat and hook it up but program out the EGR since I am sure the inspector won't check that, but again, if I am going through all this hassle to set this stuff up, I might as well make it work.....my dad used to say, "If a jobs worth doing....Its worth doing right"

Re: EGR Feed Pipe with headers, and the AIR system
I have the same problem.
I have the Jet Hot headers on my 95Z but like an idiot I thought that PA would never get emissions. I was wrong.
I bought a CAT with Air hook up on it so the Air really isn't the problem.
Right now I'm trying to find a set of stock manifolds that I can cut the EGR tube off of so that I can make a custom EGR setup.
BTW, I'm from the Harrisburg area...actually Carlisle. My car is in pieces right now due to a spun #4 rod bearing. Let me know if you find anything out about the remote EGR setup.

Re: EGR Feed Pipe with headers, and the AIR system
Before I dropped the LT1 in, I removed stuff I didn't want, like the manifolds, but surprisingly, I unbolted the tube from the exhaust, not the intake
As for a cat w/ air, I think shoebox was saying the LT1 didn't use the AIR line to the cat, which is why I was thinking maybe of setting it up as the egr feed....if the air lines usually sit behind the catylist....but now thinking about it, I think it has to! The way I understand it, the air line to the cat is only to cool it down, the manifold air lines are what do the emmissions control, since the exhaust is fairly cool relativly speaking by the time it gets to the cat, no more emmissions gasses would be forming there...hmmmm
Can anyone confirm my logic there? It *seems* to make sense, but that doesnt mean anything
Thanks

Re: EGR Feed Pipe with headers, and the AIR system
LT1's use '2 way cats'[no AIR pipe goes to them[or it]
If you have a universal cat many yimes it has the AIR pipe on it for the '3 way cat' systems[3rd gen etc]
In fact I have one on my 94[due to it already had the stock GM flange on it and made install easier than welding etc]
AIR lines are actually to 'heat up' or 'light off' the cat[s] not cool them..
Could you use the AIR pipe on the cat for the EGR?Possibly.. but I won't commit on that one.. it would be substantially cooler[ and wetter]
Tho moisture won't really hurt intake air[think RAIN..]

Re: EGR Feed Pipe with headers, and the AIR system
Well it may not matter now....When I put the braided steel power steering line on it I was forced to break part of the spark plug wire loom. I thought I had them tied up well enough, but alas...1 or 2 dropped onto the header and caused the cat to heat up red hot....Not sure if it has already been perm damaged....It was dumb of me to drive like that at all, but I did. I suppose worst case it get rid of the cat, put a new one in, put in the EGR flange, hopefully in the Y-Pipe and button it all back up....PITA stupid emmissions!!!!
