Question Egr

I believe it's my EGR I eliminated. It was a cheap liitle pipe running from my intake to exhaust manifold. Didn't want to mess w/ it when I put my motor back in so I welded both holes shut. Now I'm getting a engine code something to effect... EGR not working.

I can eliminate this w/ tunercat. However, I wanted to make sure the EGR wasn't a vital system to my engine. This isn't the part that vents the crankcase is it? I just recirculates unspent exhaust gas back into the intake right?

Thanks for the help!

You're right, the EGR just recirculates exhaust gasses, and is not a super-critical part. It helps with emissions and also keeps the engine from knocking when lugging it in a high gear. To completely eliminate it, you should remove the EGR valve itself. You can buy block-off plates that'll fit right over the hole left.

Also be sure to thank Shoebox for his site, and the better pictures that he's added.

Thanks! Those are some great pictures. Is my engine going to knock now when I try to put the hammer down and see how fast she'll go?

No. EGR is not used at WOT. Its for part load, "lugging" situations, and other modes of operation that cause excessive combustion chamber temperatures, that cause the formation of oxides of nitrogne (NOx).
