Effect of the distance of mufflers from header collectors?

What effect does how closely mufflers are to the header collectors have on flow and noise suppression? I'm thinking of mounting two 3-inch Borla XR1s off of each header, as there seems to be adequate space there. From there they'll exit to the rear of the car. No dumps. I'm hoping doing this won't impose more restriction and increase noise.

I know this may be wishful thinking, but I'd like to have tolerable interior noise levels.

TIA.

do you honestly believe 3" duals will be a restriction?

3" mufflers doesnt necessarily mean 3" everything...

ive never been able to do an exact comparison, but it seems that mufflers at the rear sound deeper.

if for no other reason, its better to put them at the back for better weight distribution.

The farther away the mufflers are from the engine the less flow and heat they see: The exhaust gasses cool as thy travel thru the system. That's why the pipes are hot. As the gasses cool they contract and there is less flow.

So a muffler behind the axle is effectively less restrictive than one attached to the header. In the Engine Masters contest mufflers are required and are attached directly to the header extensions. The correct mufflers (3 inch straight thru Magnaflow or Dynomax Ultraflow) don't cause much power loss. If there were pipes behind them with many bends, they would cause more loss than the mufflers.

As far as noise, having the muffler right under you is probably a LOT noisier than having it farther aft.

I hear you on the more noise w/ mufflers right underneath you...When I first put exhaust on my car it was a 3" true duals w/x-pipe setup that was dumped right before the rear...Granted that was loud but tolerable...But when I got my spohn TA that setup would No longer work...So I had to run just some mufflers right off the headers right under my seat.....Wanna talk about loud .....couldn't hear myself think......
