You may spend an extra 1k too build it but think of it as an insurance policy.. you could piece together a forged rotating assembly from this site and a few other rather cheaply. I found a set of j.e forged flattops 040 over last night for 250.00 shipped that retail at 800.00. I believe there is a set of eagle 6.000" rods on this site for 300.00 as well.
I hear ya man, I've been thinking the same thing but I'm just stoked to get the thing out on the road. Haven't even driven it yet since I got it a year ago.

If you throw a cam in your (now 355 after .030 over) it will put you at more like 330whp. I'd put a cam in it while it is out.
That'd be sweet. I'll definitely do a cam. I know almost nothing about what duration and lift I need though. i'd like a nice idle and good passing power. Also, is it tough to break in a new cam?

Hydraulic rollers require zero break-in. Once it's installed go romp on it!

For the cam that you want the CC503 is hard to beat and is arguably the best off-the-shelf cam for use with stock heads.

However, I'd take a look at AIs custom grinds. They are incredibly hard to beat.

So I guess I just need to :Machine the block and paint her : Go with .030 bore over? : Have my connecting rods, and crank checked by a mechanic?: New bearings, gaskets : I'd like to get it up to at least 340 at the crank. What's the best route to do that? Can I modify my stock aluminum heads for more power? Cam? Edelbrock intake with a bigger throttle body and would I be needing hydraulic roller or solid roller cam and lifters? Thanx for all the reponses, I'm takin em all in.
A cheap rebuild will be a step backwards from stock.

The Edelcrap intake has been shown to possibly be worth a LOSS and on the best side nowhere near worth the price. I don't think you will find a single sucessful build using those.

Ported stock heads are the best choice for most builds.

A cam and boltons setup should meat your short term goal and good heads and cam like Joe and I run could have you over 400rwhp on the stock shortblock which maybe is a bit much to ask of a 140K shortblock but with a lower mileage one or with fresh bearings rings and resized rods you could do it.

Leave the solid roller stuff to builds with aftermarket management.

If you could get a chance to be around a few well done stock shortblock cars I think you would be shocked at just what the old GM mill can do.

True I had my stock crank sent out, stock "pink" rods, and speed pro hypers. I spray the car all the time 150 shot after 150 shot and it still runs like a dream. We even used a bore scope on all 8 cylinders and it looked as new as they day the shortblock was put together. Hey dwayne or joe, would my stock crank be suitable for a boosted application? Im talking d1sc or t88 pushing my car into the 9's. What about a 300 shot? Im talking forged h beams and quality forged pistons with a stock crank.

Yeah those Edelbrocks are spendy. How much does it cost to have my stock heads ported and what does it all entail? Also, when shopping for a good rebuild kit what brand should I be lookin for?

Re: Educate me on building a 383 please

Stock crank is really pretty good especially for the price.
I am unaware of anyone overpowering one.

Joe and I use the same heads, his motor being a 383 meant he got a little more cam.
http://advancedinduction.com is who we trust for our heads and cam work. Results are consistently well above average. Price is more than some others but the results(power and reliability) are worth it and still cheaper than aftermarket heads and will work better than as cast aftermarket heads.

There is another guy who has a more race prepped Impala same heads and cam I have on a stock shortblock that was rebuilt with new rod bolts and a such, 3800lbs so still heavier than an f-body has gone 10.9 and runs consistent low 11s. My car is a lot better than average for a b-body modded to the same level(faster than almost all the strokers I know of) but Pat's car going half a second faster really shows what the parts are good for.

Sweet. Thank you, very helpful advice. When I get the funds I'll post my shopping list and hopefully get some do's and don'ts from all you guys. Looks like I'll be stickin with my 3.23 rear for now though.
