Edelbrock Heads/Cam package results....
Edelbrock Heads/Cam package results....
Yep, I know a lot of people have been waiting for this. I just picked up the December issue of Popular Hot Rodding and there it is. Its the car from the GMHTP "grapes of wrath" write ups and Johnny Hunkins is the author. For those of us who followed that series, they just missed the 12's in that car with bolt on's.
Without going into all the numbers, they got the following:
+46hp at 6000rpm/ +40lbs Tq at 6000rpm after swap.
"stock" was 249 HP @ 5600, Edelbrock H/C 283hp at 5900rpm.
Like I said, pick up the issue to see all the flow numbers, cam specs, lift, I/E data etc...I aint typing all that $hit tonight.
This is really good timing regarding the previous thread on the LLoyd Elliott H/C combo, now you can see where that combo stands vs. Edelbrock vs. LT4 etc. I think what they want to get across in the article is that the edelbrock package is the least expensive H/C on the market today for the LT1, it has some advantages/disadvantages vs. other stuff out there, especially since the Edelbrock package doesnt require any PCM programming. I think Summitt is asking $1020 for the heads and $240 for the cam. It really appears like the Edelbrock stuff is probably the most trouble free H/C swap but it does leave HP on the table vs. other popular "budget" swaps.
So what do you guys think.....................................??

Re: Edelbrock Heads/Cam package results....
My relatively small xe224/230 probably got me close to 40 rwhp over stock... Id be extremely pissed to see those gains after spending taht kinda cash. Just think... Lloyds setups can crank out nearly 400 rwhp for a little more money.

GMHTP seems to waste alot of coin. Maybe they are getting "hooked up" with great deals, but they did put an MTI 396 in the yellow Formula that layed down 11.90s at a low mph if I remember correctly (116 maybe?). My point is that its not new for them to have subpar results from their projects. However, at least they publish the results.

He used to be the guy over at GMHTP now he's the editor of Pop Hot Rodding.
The real problem he has is emissions in CA, that and I'm sure some of these parts are free, so whos to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Re: Edelbrock Heads/Cam package results....
Stock tuning with anything other than a stock cam and heads is in a word stupid, a stock car stands to gain from tuning much less a modded one. Magazines are a poor source for info they have to make advertizers happy. Then there is the fact that guys with strong full bolton b-bodies are putting down more power than that even with our heavier drivetrains, tiny cam and "crappy" iron heads. I see this as confirmation that the Edelbrock stuff is a joke.
Re: Edelbrock Heads/Cam package results....
My bolt-ons and 1.6 rollers were worth more than that.
There should definitly be some tuning done with any cam and heads package, but even if you added say 20hpwith tuning thats still only 305. Pretty embarrassing for a H/C car.

Re: Edelbrock Heads/Cam package results....
i dunno... maybe I'm loosing my mind
but I think theres some obvious things that are being over looked here. & no i'm not trying to support the Edelbrok stuff... In fact just about anything I ever bought from them in the last 20 years didn't fit quite right for one reason or another. However I think they are getting a bad rap here because people are not understanding what they are reading or just dont want to like the stuff for some reason.
The first thing is that the math is wrong
249 stock HP plus the 46 would = 295 not 283 like it says on the original post. but that's just a small difference I know.
The real point I'm trying to get to is this...... Look at the stock number... 249 HP with just about all the bolt ons known to mankind?!? If anyone came on here & said "I just dyno'd my bolt on car & made 249 HP" there would be a whole lot of folks trying to tell the guy to find the problems with his car
yet nobody touches the subject so far
Now either there was something wrong with the car or the dyno correction factors are skewed somehow.
back to the math part... the 249 + 46 HP is almost a 20% gain. which isnt too bad really.. adding the same percentage (just for the sake of discussion) to a bolt on car that put down 290HP (like my Impala did with stock valve springs & rockers) would come out to just under 350.
In short what I'm saying is I think the numbers themselves are somewhat out of context & the actual percentage of improvement should be looked at more here than the peak number everyone's paying attention too.
Just something to consider before ya start saying the package sucks
just my 2 cents

Re: Edelbrock Heads/Cam package results....
Im sure with all of the above being said, dont forget that car is an a4 and it has a 2800+ converter in it. So are we dyno racing here or are we going to wait for them to hit the track and see what they get?
