Ebay Opti = P0336 CPS out of range??

I'm trying to get to the bottom of this p0336 code popping up and I can't seem to get it fixed. So far, i've re-routed the Crank Position Sensor wiring so that it travels no where near any spark plug wires, i've changed out the sensor, replaced the opti wiring harness, checked the reluctor wheel for play and still the code haunts my dash board after I clear it with my obd scanner. The only thing that I can think of is that the opti distributor that I put in which was from Ebay is what is causing this due to its poor quality internals or faulty assembly. I went ahead and bought another opti, luckly they were on sale from Summit which i'm planning on installing soon.

Anyone have any suggestions to what might be causing this code to keep popping up besides the areas that I described?

Thanks.

Re: Ebay Opti = P0336 CPS out of range??

There are several possible causes listed in the shop manual:

-poor connections/terminal tension at the sensor
-excessive timing chain/gear wear
-excessive distributor drive backlash or other distributor problem
-crankshaft reluctor wheel damage or improper installation
-engine front cover assembly damage
-sensor coming in contact with reluctor wheel

If you would like a .pdf of the complete 5 page description and diagnostic aids for this code, let me know. The diagnostic parameter that sets the code (CKP:Lo Resolution Angle) is fairly complex, consisting of an analysis of crankshaft position vs cam position departure from "normal" position

Yes, Thank you I would like to take a look at the PDF. I have a feeling that behind the timing cover could be the problem. I could have sworn that at high rpms roughly around 5000 that I could hear some kind of chatter. Hearing that, I went to work on adjusting my rocker arms to eliminate lash thinking this was a possible cause but the sound would come back intermittently. I'm not very confident in the timing chain that I installed when I did my rebuild. I picked up a coyles set and it was significantly cheaper now that I recall than the GM performance one. If there is any slack on the chain, could this vary the timing from the reading on the reluctor wheel to the optical sensor?

Re: Ebay Opti = P0336 CPS out of range??

Yes. That is basically the second item in the list above. Cam position (Opti wheel) departs from where it is expected to be, relative to the crank position (CKP reluctor).
