Eating seals
Eating seals
I have a 95 Caprice LT1 that I'm guessing has about 175k on the clock and the rear seal was leaking. I noticed that the front seal is leaking as well now. Already put a new seal in. When I replaced that seal, had the oilpan off to replace that gasket as well and you could still see the crosshatching marks on the cylinder walls. SO I'm just wondering about the condition of the motor. I figure that the crank is starting to wobble a little and thats what is tearing the seals up. Correct? I was thinking about a good rebuild kit, but all the ones I have found include pistons. Do you really need to go that deep into the motor? I figure the crank may need to be replaced but I don't know yet. Any good ways to go on this? What would you guys do? Keep in mind it's a stock motor and I would like to keep it this way for simplicity.
Re: Eating seals
Your crank is likely not moving. Since if it were, it would take out at least one main bearing. The crank could be grooved but even Stevie Wonder should have seen that. Have you tried using High Mileage oil that contains more swelling agent?
Re: Eating seals
No the seal is correct. I think that since my LT1 sees a little different enviroment than most here (JEEP) that might be part of the downfall. I spend alot of time just idling around over stuff. Not at any kind of speed at all. So the motor has been lugged somewhat. So could that make the crank ""walk"" and possibly tear the seals out? Just a theory though.
Re: Eating seals
Crankshaft is not moving, If it was, I think you would be having more problems than the seals. Try measuring crankshaft end play with a dial Indicator. I can't remember the spec tho. seals arn't made too last forever...
