Dynaspark vs. MSD OPTI

Well time has come almost done with my motor and i need to buy a new Opti. Just curious as to what most people have on their car. Im looking at either Dynaspark or and MSD... Ive bought a few cheapies in the past and well wasnt to pleased to say the least. I figure for another 125 or so over the GM unit is the dynaspark any better?... And with the MSD ive heard mixed reviews.. im looking for people who ACTUALLY used these. To many threads of "What ive heard" thanks!!

BTW i also have MSD 6al box and Blaster coil that will be going on

Re: Dynaspark vs. MSD OPTI

Most will agree that the Dynaspark has greater reliability than the MSD. My brother's Z went through TWO MSDs before converting back to an ACD.

However, the stock AC Delco has the most reliability and consistency at about half the price. I've been turning the same stock ACD since 2004, and I haven't been easy on it.

Re: Dynaspark vs. MSD OPTI

None of those are good options. The stock ac delco is the best there is.

I've been following optisparks for 10 years on the corvetteforum and nothing beats the stock acdelco unit.

There were some early dynasparks that were good, then the company got bought out and the product bastardized

If you have the early non vented unit, you should convert it to a vented setup

Stock delco.
Since your 94 is apart though you could consider swapping timing covers and such to vented.
You could put an MSD cap and rotor on it which converts your's to vented.
You could get creative and make a vent system.

I have a stock delco that has seen 7000.

IMO when people have a lot of opti troubles it is usually caused rather than the cause.

I have handled an MSD opti a guy an hour or so away was having massive troubles getting a car to run right. I volunteered to come spend a day trying to sort it out, one of the issues we found was the timing adjustment have come apart, so an AutoZone reamn opti ended up being part of the fix.
So I never bought the MSD opti but I have helped resolve the issues one caused.

I have used the MSD cap and rotor on my car though most recently it just has a Delco.

You actually make a VERY good point. Way too many instant reviews. Rather than let us know how it works "when you fire it up" why don't you wait till it lasts 100K as many of us have the stocker last then report back, or at least wait a year.

Power mods you can often evaluate quickly, distributors might work fine for a few months then have problems, much like trannies, a good initial report is meaningless, down the road matters a whole lot more.

Re: Dynaspark vs. MSD OPTI

I have about 20K on my MSD, which has been on for about five years. I went through three A.C.D. optis on my 93 before this one, so that doesn't say much about them being the best, at least in unvented form. The MSD is vented, and I didn't have to change the timing cover, and everything that goes along with it for that benefit. With that said, it's still to early to tell IMO.

Personally can't vouch for other than an AC Delco Opti. Never had any issues whatsoever and a AC Delco opti is much cheaper than an MSD opti. Other than being red what are you gaining over stock?

Re: Dynaspark vs. MSD OPTI

Honestly, the only msd thing lately that hasn't failed me is my msd-6btm which is based on their old school designs.

Anything w/ msd name on it lately has been total garbage. I even bought spark plug wires from msd that were bad out of the box (spark arc'd).

How do you mess up a wire?

I think I heard where msd's name was sold to someone else and they use it just for the name.

we may die of old age before then, i bought the damn thing 3 years ago, still haven't used it. in my case i was building an LT1 from scratch, i didn't have a stock one so i had to do something, and the billet construction of the MSD unit drew me in.
