Dual Cats--->Single Cat

I'm sure someone out there has done this, but how many people have switched from the dual cat set-up (96-97) to one single cat after the y pipe. Reason I ask is because headers for the dual cats are about $200 bucks more than the singles, and for what an extra flange or is there really some other major differnence between the two types?
Any input would be appriciated.

i have a 96 with the arizona speed and marine headers with a single cat. I dont know for sure what the differences are, but i know they are currently bolted on my car. i bought the setup used, so i dont exactly know what y-pipe was used. The headers are pre 96 though.
