Drove Without Maf!!!!
Drove Without Maf!!!!
Hey guys.... I was noticing a lack of power that I was just sick and tired of........... So one of the guys suggessted that I unplug the MAF and see if anything changes...... well EVERYTHING changed! I got SO much performance out of my baby, its as if I got a new engine! It felt so Good, I floored it and it down shifted to first and I was sideways and almost donuted out of control!!!
What should I do to fix this!! the SES light came right on when I unplugged it... what should I do

nope...it goes to Speed Density mode. What the hell is a limp home mode? I never had it happened to me and i have disconected many sensors while the car was running....did you guys just make that term up
No, "Limp Home" is a mode that pre 94 PCM's had it was accessed by Putting a 4.7K Resistor across the diag terminal to ground (A+B) and it instructed the ECU to run off the CAL pack. The CAL pack is a chip with default operating calibrations for that engine. this was to bypass any bad sensors and allow engine to run long enough to get engine into shop AKA "LIMP HOME"
well your maf may be shot, my maf was giving me low blms so i put in another and they went right to 128 i think mafs can kind of wear out or something my friends maf kind of went down hill on him to.

So, if I unplug my MAF in my 95, the PCM will automatically recognize the Speed Density Mode? I thought you had to modify a switch or something on the PCM? Also, what in the heck do you do with the plug that goes into the MAF if you unplug it? Tuck it in somewhere or what?

If they wear out after time mine should be going soon 175K and counting.... plus i used to live down a gravel road which all the bumps and dust cant help.
What should I do to fix it!!!???
If it puts me in "speed density mode" (sounds like something good) then why Would I even have a MAF there in the first place.... Why not just unplug the ****er and take it out of the intake system!! Its blocking some air from flowing anyways... and then just having it programed out from the pcm so it doesnt throw codes.......
My friend took his MAF out and said it gave him alot of horsepower... why even have a maf if its better to drive without??

well you don't want to just run it with the maf unplugged you will have a constant SES light and the fans will run constantly. The fans will burn out sooner and the constant SES light would get annoying if you have a friend with a programmer you can program the car to run in speed density with out a SES light.
Being in Speed Density is not necessarily a good thing. First of all the MAF is not a restriction in a stock or even reletively high modified car so removing it is a mute point. Also you will most likely notice a dramatic loss in fuel economy. As far as fixing your problem you might look for an air leak downstream of the MAF and before the Throttle Body, and if you can get readings of your Long Term Trim Values, and verify proper O2 operation that might give some insight as to what is going on with the car. All in all not running the MAf is a bad idea unless you have a blower or turbo car and then there are other problems to deal with.
OK, how exactly can I test mine. I have ****ty milage, (14-15mpg, mostly rural roads). Im not that damn hard on the car. The best Ive been able to muster up was about 16.4. My airbaox was fubar from the previous owner, and the 'bellow' (I believe?) Is kinda crunched together. Ill get pics tomorrow, maybe its normal, but I highly doubt it. Can I try unplugging my maf to see if its problematic, or is this a OBD1 deal?

Well I unplugged it, and it wouldnt start. So I started it and unplugged it but it seemed the way it was. Now the SES light is on. I assume it will go away after a few more starts?
