Arrow Dropping engine... steering linkage and sir coil question...

I've heard before that if you disconnect the steering wheel linkage and move the wheel around, you risk damaging the SIR coil. Any way to prevent this?
I'm dropping the engine tomorrow and I'd really like to avoid this.
Thanks.

I don't see how since the shaft can't rotate like a ball and socket. Why don't you take it out the top?

i believe you can just lock your steering column by trying to move the steering wheel without the key in it. I didn't worry about it when i did my motor because the lock is broke on my column and i just made sure it didn't turn any while the motor was out.

Yes, lock the column in the straight ahead position. You can do whatever you want to the linkage and stuff, but just don't spin the steering wheel with the linkage off.

So tonight I'm going to drop my k-member to get everything ready for the new tubular.

I can just keep my steering wheel locked, and undo the lines from the steering rack, as well as the yoke/joint deal and just drop the whole thing down right?

Will I have problems trying to get that steering joint to line back up when I go to put up the tubular k-member w/ the steering rack, engine, long tubes and transmission in it?

Get your new setup with the wheels pointed straight ahead and see if you can get your steering shaft to line up. If you have to end up making a minor tweak to get it lined up, it can be dealt with when you get an alignment.

You should not have any hidden problems.
