drain plug seal

perhaps this is a dumb question but when i changed my oil i noticed that there was no seal around the drain plug. could this be a potential problem? i put oil in it and finished everything up (the only car i have insurance on right now so its not like i could go anywhere) i havent noticed any oil leaking at all and the level is right where it was when i changed it. (its been a few hundred miles.) on my girlfriends camaro, just came out of storage today, the seal for the drain plug was so old that it just cracked and crumbled into a million pieces. again, is this a bad thing because if so then i will be buying two new drain plugs with seals and doing two oil changes tomorrow.

thanks a lot,
adam
