Double roller timing chain rubbing cam retainer plate?
Double roller timing chain rubbing cam retainer plate?
Alright guys I'm starting to put my car back together now and the install is going fairly well for my cam install except for the usual snags but all in all okay...
I have a cloyes double roller that I am going to use. I put the top sprocket on my new cam to see if everything is right. Now I'm not sure if this is right but when I spin the chain sprocket, it doesn't spin completely freely and rubs against the cam retainer plate. I can get it to spin when I loosten the three bolts on the sprocket and pull it off a but but when it's on tight, its pretty hard to spin. I was thinking of grinding down the cam retainer plate a bit but I want to see if anyone else has had this happen cause it doesn't seem right to me

haha.. yeah.. thats one thing i'm sure of. I'm being told on the impala forum that a member had the same problem about a week ago and it was the bolts that hold the retainer on.. could be

Yes, its doesn't rub the retainer, it rubs on the 2 retainer bolts just a bit. My friend with a lathe and milling machine did a very nice job on my cam sprocket (closes true dual), he took off a bunch of material to clear the bolts, then when I put here together she cleared but was still very close, so I took out the retaining bolts and put them both up against a grinder
you'll be surpized how much material you can take off the bolts because the torx hole in them is pretty deep, so grind away, but the job done on my sprocket was immaculate and cleared the bolts without griding, but knowing me I grinded the bolts and then there was a ton of room

Mine rubbed the TINIEST bit on the retainer. IT did not when cold, so I'm guessing the clearances changed a tiny bit when it got hot somehow. It rubbed a crapload on the timing cover, and that took a LOT of CAREFUL grinding/smoothing to clearance for the chain. I was afraid I was going to grind through the cover.

Thanks guys. I'll get going on this tonight and hopefully be done with the car by Friday but we'll see what happens. I hope I dont have to change my timing cover and can just grind it. I have a 96 so I could be screwed
