Doin an oil change

So yeah, I'm doing MY first oil change attempt, as I have never had the tools to do one myself. I think I'll be getting M1 Synthetic 0w-30 that seems to be pretty popular for the Summer? Anyways, what do you guys put the oil in? I'm pretty sure an oil pan right, but how much are those? THAT I do not have. After I flush my oil system, how much should I put in, 5 or 6 quarts? I can't seem to find the German Castrol Syntec stuff, so I'm going with M1 cause I hear it's pretty good. I have also considered Royal Purple motor oil or Red Line at 5w-30.

You need at least a 5 quart oil pan to catch the oil. I have a rectangular oil catch container and on the top of the container it has a recessed area with 2 plugs that let the oil drain to the inside of the container. Kind of like a built in funnel. It also has a cap to drain the oil out of the container into another container. Most auto repair places will take the used oil with no charge. At least around here they do.

Are you asking how much they cost? Should be easily under 10 bucks.

Re: Doin an oil change

This is the first time you have had the tools to do an oil change? All it takes is a 15mm socket or wrench and a jack which should come with the car. I'm not trying to sound like an a$$, i guess its just because I try to do everything on my car myself and I think everyone else does the same
I would run 10w-30 moblil one synthetic in the summer because in the summer the oil will run alot hotter and the thicker you have it the less it wil break down. I run 5w-30 in the winter and 10w-30 in the summer. Just my $0.2

How often does everyone change their tranny fluid and the oil in the rear differential?

Yeah I live with my mom, my parents are divorced and we never had any tools in the past year for me to do my oil change. Sounds kind of corny, but I got used to it

Re: Doin an oil change

Drain the oil and put the plug back in the oil pan(the one on the car), remove the old filter and install a new one. Then place the car on a level surface and dump in 5 quarts. Start the car and let it run for about 10 seconds. Then go and check the oil level and add as needed...I think it is 5.5 qts ne way. But that depends on what filter you use.

Re: Doin an oil change

Why does it matter if I have the car on a flat surface while i'm dumping the oil in, just as long as I check it when it's on a flat surfact, I should be good. I may be needing to add 1 more quart in, but everything seemed fine when I checked it.

Re: Doin an oil change

Because the oil pan (the one bolted to the engine) is designed to let all the oil flow out when it's level. If the car is on an incline some of the old oil won't flow out.

Re: Doin an oil change

The oil has already been drained. I'm talking about adding the new oil in the crankcase.

Re: Doin an oil change

I suppose to be pedantic the car does not need to be level at the moment when you're pouring the oil in, but it should be when you're measuring the oil.

The problem is that you can't run the car with all the oil out, so you want to move it to a good spot before you start tearing it apart.
