Talking Does the LT4 conversion Make 400+ hp?

Can anyone tell me if the LT4 conversion (LT4 heads, Lt4 intake, LT4 hot cam, and 52mm tb) actually makes 400+ hp? All of the stories say that it makes 430+ hp at the flywheel. Is this true? What kind of numbers does it make at the rear wheels? This is going in '93 Z28, auto equipped, k&N, MSD full ignition , 13.99@104 camaro. Also, can anyone recommend a torque converter for this setup. I am not looking for a 900hp monster, just a reliable daily driver with around 380 to 390 hp.

Who is Loyd Elliot and what makes his stuff so good?

lloyd elliot is someone who does head porting, and head and cam deals. It's pretty cheap and has been shown to work, that's why it's so good.

I have a pieced-together LT4 conversion in a '92 Camaro with Hedman shorties, stock throttlebody, and custom tuning and I put down 320 rwhp on a Mustang Dyno.

It makes around 400HP, but to the flywheel/flexplate....meaning anywhere from 320-350.

I pulled 339RWHP without a tune. Hotcam Kit, LT4 Intake/Heads/SLP Exhausts. Do the math, it should be ~380 Flywheel HP. With LT Headers and a tune, you could eek out more.

With a good tune and longtubes you shouldn't have a prob getting 400hp at the crank. However i'd invest the money in an aftermarket cam and stock ported head setup, you'll get more power for the same or less money.

Re: Does the LT4 conversion Make 400+ hp?

I've looked into it for my car, and here's what I see.
The LT4 isn't the best kit out there. You can make up to 30 or 40 hp more for the same money elsewhere. However, the LT4 has a long history without serious reliability issues, and many tuner kits don't. I think the biggie is the tune, especially if you're doing it mail order. LT4s are common, and therefore the tuner has expereince with your combo, even though he's 500 miles away. So if the tech portion of the swap is scary to you, the LT4 has an edge.
Good Luck!

Re: Does the LT4 conversion Make 400+ hp?

I have already purchased the parts from a friend on the cheap ($900 for everything) so it is too late to go another route. All of the articles , including MORE Performance in Charlotte, N.C. say tat it puts out over 430+ hp on an engine dyno. Are they misleading eveyone? Just curious because I do know anyone who has this kit installed on their car to ask. I know that there are people here who have done everything and in between to their camaros. That is why I come here for my answers. You guys rock!!

Re: Does the LT4 conversion Make 400+ hp?

The MORE Performance test on the LT4 "conversion" was done about 7-8 years ago. It made 429 flywheel HP on an engine dyno. Some things to consider, if I can recall correctly from the old magazine article they did on the MORE test:

-appeared to be a "bare" engine, no intake, no exhaust, no accessories. That produces "SAE gross" HP ratings, not the SAE "net" that the factory uses.

-the test setup included larger injectors, larger throttle body and long tube headers. Maybe some more things they "forgot" to mention.

-the tuning was done using a $3,000 aftermarket ECU.

So... bottom line is you could probably make 430flywheelHP, but it isn't going to happen with the LT4 conversion kit alone. You will need a few "extras".

Ultra Dog:

It's kind of hard to "do the math" when you don't tell us what your drivetrain is.

Re: Does the LT4 conversion Make 400+ hp?

I don't have the LT4 Kit but have a very simular setup. I have ported heads that flow about the same as the LT4 flow #s I found on the net with a cc305 cam, which is very close to the LT4 hotcam. The car also has long tube headers, 52mm TB, port matched intake, all the common bolt ons. I had a mail order tune by PCMforless.

I had the car dyno tuned last weekend by Alvin from PCMforless and it put out 340 HP/344TQ at the rear wheels through a 3400 Edge converter and a 9" rear. Just as a side note the tune I originally got from Bryan at PCMforless was about as close as you could get as far as A/F ratio and Timing. Alvin got alittle more HP and TQ from it. I have seen alot of guys around the LT1 boards that have had simular results from a PCMforless tune with a popular engine setup.

I think my setup should be really close to 400 at the crank just to give you an idea.

Thanks for all of the help. Iam going with it anyway because of the price and reliability. After all is said and done I believe I'll put a 125 horse shot on it just for kicks.

Re: Does the LT4 conversion Make 400+ hp?

Been down the LT4 route. It was a good kit at the time, easy one call and I had it delivered. After several thousands of dollars after the initial purchase I was still only pulling 340 thru a TH350. For the money, there are other options that are just as reliable.

But I do think the 400+ at the flywheel is attainable with the stock PCM, stock injectors and some kind of headers.
