does bad opti feel like no fuel?
does bad opti feel like no fuel?
ok I had a problem yesterday and I thought it could be fuel pump related, now some people have told me it could be OPTI, what do you guys think???
Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!
I just did a U-turn on a divided road; I went around real fast because I saw a break in traffic, then I got on it hard to out accelerate the upcoming cars. Well, near the higher RPM's of first gear (not exactly sure where, maybe about 5000-5200 RPM's, I was looking in the rear view mirror), the car died like it hit the rev limiter. But, I could tell from the sound of it I was nowhere near redlining. Funny thing was it did it for about a second (and we all know that is a long time when trying to accelerate fast) and then that stopped and the car continued accelerating to even higher RPM's to it's normal shift point, then shifted with no more problems.
I have tried a few test acceleration runs and it hasn't happened again.
Was it because I have less then half a tank and took the U-turn very fast and it might have taken fuel or fuel pressure away from the fuel pump or could the pump be going

What if the problem only shows up above 5000rpm in second gear? In my car it pulls very hard in 1st and all the way through second until it hits that 5000rpm. My car still ran a 13.96 at 96.74mph in this configuration too.
My gas mileage is still great, driveability is excellent under all conditions when under part throttle. The only other problem is a hard start condition when starting up the engine cold. Sometimes it takes 2-3 tries.
I'm going to get my fuel filter changed today, as well as having one spark plug changed. My car has 83k on it, and at 60k we changed 7 out of the 8 plugs, but nasty #2 wouldn't come out. Now I figure that one bad plug could be causing my problems. Does that make sense?
I can't see my problem being the opti, since the problem shows up even when the car is cold (I cooled the car down at the dragstrip for 90min and the problem still showed up, so the engine was nowhere near hot)

FWIW, changing that one plug and the fuel filter solved my problem.
Hey Johnpsz...
This could be a number of things, including the Opti going bad...Only time will tell. It could have been the gas sloshing around & the fuel pump not getting enough fuel.
Have you ever run out of gas in your car? If so, then how many times? Apparently, when running out of gas occurs, the fuel pump gets slightly damaged. The more you run out of gas, the more damage the fuel pump becomes, and so on...So keep that in mind.
Time will tell if it is the Opti. Don't worry about it too much for now, until it starts to get worse, then it could be a multitude of concerns.
You COULD start on the little things, such as checking the plugs & wires, replacing them if necessary, the fuel filter, cleaning out the EGR valve or buying a new one...All these things could be a start to help you with the process of elimination. AND, correcting/replacing the above items will definitely HELP your car, so what the heck???
Hope this helps.

Carlos93Z,
Thanks I have run out of gas a couple of times in the past. It is mainly because the, gage is out of wak and I sometimes forget how far off it is, because I don't use it as a daily driver. Since I filled the tank, it hasn't done it again, so I'm going to say it was sloshing fuel.
My gage is way off also, when I fill the car it goes as far up as possible (way over the full lines) and stays there for many mile then slowly drops and if it gets to about an 1/8th of a tank then it is out of gas, seriously the car dies kind of out of gas and the gage said it has 1/8th or more of a tank left.

It's got to do with the shape of the tanks. When the gauge says 1/2 you've really got 1/4. When it says 1/4, you've got an 1/8. No real solution I can see besides pulling the dash apart, and physically removing the needle and placing it back a little further on the peg.
