Do your Motive gears whine?

Do all motive gears whine? Or is this an installation issue or need to be reshimmed? Don't know much about rear ends but this car has a whine to it. the gears have about 1000 miles on them. Can I put some kind of additive in the rear? Please give me some ideas?

Agree. Motives are known to be among the quietest (even though most any gear set can be quiet when properly installed).

Re: Do your Motive gears whine?

I Purchased a set of motive 4.10s a wile back, lots of miles on them now and i have a whine as well. Rear end was assembled by an experienced builder who used to work for reputable rear end man in socal (toms axles). I took it back to him saying that he possibly set the pattern too tight but he said it was set loose and that the sound was because of the brand of gears that i bought. His explination was that since the whine occurs under both acceleration and deceleration it had to be the way the gears are, not the install. He said that if it was an install problem that the sound would only occur under acceleration load or deceleration not both. He told me not to worrie and there would be no issues, its just the way tose gears sound.

Needless to say that i was kinda pissed , now i want some Drag radials so i can dump hard and try to break the rear end , then ill just get a 12bolt.

My motive gears whine a little bit. I romp on my car quite hard though so I think that is what has given the gears their whine. I would point the finger at installation since you have only 1,000 miles on them.

Re: Do your Motive gears whine?

Gerar whine is caused by incorrect shimming... after installing 2 sets of gears... and still ending up with whine I've decided to rock it till she blows... tired of throwing mony at theis 10bolt... I need a 12 damnit...

I got the Richmond's because I heard they were a little stronger. I have 4.10:1's and had them setup. They have no whine whatsoever with about 10k miles on them. I have the stock 10-bolt with the summit installation kit and the solid pinion spacer with a summit differential cover. The cover makes it quite easy to change the fluid as well as looking a little bit better. I would say based on my experience it is the way they are setup.

No way are richmonds stronger then GM/motive, the day I put on Nittos sometime after there install I broke 3 teeth and they whined like a 2 yo til that day, I sent them back to summit and they refunded basically cause richmond is junk(str8 from the horses mouth)...whoever told you that doesnt know what there talkin about
