thanks guys.....so your telling me if i had the performance rear end i wouldve had first gear on my console, like it would actually go 1 2 D OD.......so if i remove the block dont you still have to change the console and get one that has first gear(like number 1) on it....or i would have to live with always only saying 2nd.

Weird, mine shifted right at 49mph at 6,000. Ohh well, tachs and speedo's are known to be off on these cars.

The 700R4 and the 4L60 are the same trans, GM just changed the designation. The 4L60E is the same as the 4L60/700R4 but with electronic controls.
GM changed the name so people would not associate it with the "bad" 700R4s of the mid 80s, the ones they fixed about 87 or 88.
I have a built 4L60E by a local tranny builder and I asked him about manually shifting it and he said yep go ahead, so I do every once in awhile. I manually upshift alot but I have been trying not to manually downshift.

I'm not saying I shift to 1st at 50, I mean I could could and compared to other auto cars I had in the past, they wouldn't let you. So basically to answer my question, that is how they are. Shifting inot 1st and at 30 really slowed it donw, like slamming the brakes without locking them up!

So basically you guys would think its ok to upshift, bu be careful downshifting? I like to downshift on hills, like to 3rd, not 1st. Just to dsave the brakes.

Also I was looking at shift kits/manual vb's, and in summit 4l60 and 700r4 are listed the same for 93.

Down shifting at high RPM and engine breaking will tear up the coast clutch and forward sprag. As will "Goosing" your car hard all the time.

Isn't that what I said (without part specifics )?

I frequently take mine out of OD to engine brake and sometimes into 2nd, but I don't do it at a high rate of speed. Just remember that brakes are cheaper than transmissions.

That's because they are basically the same tranny-just different names.
