Angry Do MSD Coils go bad quick?

Do MSD coils go bad quick?

I was told by the GM Dealership that my Opti was bad. I have over 104K miles so I believed them. They tested the Opti & coil and they said my coil was fine. So I did a Opti change and at the same time I did a header install. I went to go start my car after the Opti/header install and it didnt start!!! I didnt understand this becuase everything was new. New Opti, new plugs & wires. The MSD coil was only a few months old.

Well!!!

I go and put the stock coil in and what do you know...the damnn thing starts. I should of checked that from the beginning but I totally forgot. What a nimrod I am! Anyhow, just thought I'd share that with ya all.
So MSD coils always do this? Dude at a local speed shop said that those MSD coils suck and to stay with stock..I guess I will now. Hmmm...

Always? No. Sometimes? Yes...as many so other coil manufacturers products also do.

You hear of a lot of the aftermarket coils going out. It is probably a good idea to keep the stock one in the truck just in case you get stranded.

I keep my stock one in the trunk just in case, but so far I've had my MSD coil for almost 3 years now with no problems at all.

Aftermarket coils for our cars are hit or miss. I've had one go out after a month. My current MSD has been on for about 4k now. Definitely hang on to the stocker if it still works.

Are there any advantages to an aftermarket coil?

As mentioned before, aftermarket coils are hit or miss. Most people have no problems with the MSDs, while others swear against them. I've been running an MSD Blaster #8226 dual connector for over 20k miles, and it works great. I've witnessed others who have put one on and have it fail in less than 1k miles.

It's totally up to you on what you'd like to do.

I have had my MSD blaster coil for 40,000 miles and no problems yet. But I have heard that MSD does stand for "might suddenly die" . Overall I am happy with their product.

My MSD coil only lasted 10K miles; I switched to a Crane coil and not problems since (20K miles).

There is no reason to use anything other than the stock coil. The previous owner of my T/A put on an MSD coil... I've had the car for about 65k now and have had no problems with the coil.
