Cam on stock heads

Was just curious if its worth putting in an aftermarket cam on a stock valve train.

Looks like im gunna have to tear the whole front of my motor off anyway for an opti change and timing cover oil leak. But i dont really have the cash for aftermarket head work.

If it is safe, how big a cam could you put in, what gains could i expect, and would the gains be worth the trouble?

Would an LT4 hotcam be feasable? or what valve train work would it take to do the LT4 cam?

Im really clueless about cams, so any info is great.

Thanks,

Austin

your gonna have to change springs no matter what cam you go with. you should also pust som 1.6 rockers on. it you never planning on upgrading your heads i would go with a hot cam or a 305. but if your gonna port your heads down the line id go with a cc306 they make good power on stock heads also. do you have to pass emissions?

the absolute cheapest:
cam $250
springs $100
you can use your rockers if you wanted....
reuse stock lifters.....
intake gasket $20
miscellanous crap $50

what gains you will get depends on your other mods.

some ppl run low 12's with just a cam and bolt ons

Which cam you guys recommend, im thinking CC305 or XE230/236?

I really want all the power i can get without spinning the engine too high like the CC306 does.

Would a hydra rev kit encompas all the things i need other than a cam/gaskets and such?

thanks again!

You don't need the hydra rev kit and with the CC305 you won't need to see as high of RPM's as the 230/236....though the 230/236 pulls all the way down to around 2400 RPM's all the way up the power band...

I would go to www.cmotorsports.com and contact them about aftermarket cams. They have great customer service and their knowledge about cams and motors is top notch.

I have the XE 224/230 on stock heads and I love it. Great power and pulls awesome. I would talk to them about what kind of setup you want to go with.

alot of people run a cam on stock heads...LT4 cam is alright except for being a little on the mild side...look into the cc305 or the ones mentioned above
