I would, cooler oil is better right? Plus, what are you going to gain by taking it off?

No,and it lowers the oil pressure if it has ANY trash in it. It won't hurt a thing to remove it and go with a
longer filter.
Can't remember anybody who hasn't removed it.

Re: do i need the oil cooler

Most of us with modded car run a 160 stat and fan temps 40degrees lower than GM intended. Plus we often choose synthetic and even dino oils have improved in the 10 years since there things were built. Take all that into account and I say the cooler is unecessary. The point about it being full of debris from a blown motor is a good one too.
Oh and oil most certainly can be run too cold any automotive fluid besides maybe fuel and brake fluid can be run too cold. They are not designed to work at ambient tempature but rather warmer from the heat created by the working parts they protect. Engine oil you probably want 180-200 maybe 220, tranny 160-200 this helps expel condensation too.

You don't but the earlier SBC filters will fit and they have more filtering capacity.

Re: do i need the oil cooler

If you have enough "trash" in your engine to block the oil cooler, you have bigger problems than the oil cooler I kept the cooler on my 381 stroker, works fine, no problems. And I run a longer filter with the cooler. Oil temperature gauge tells me that the oil temp is where its supposed to be. l But then I like the stock pump and stock pan, so its not a very popular setup with the people who feel if it came from the factory, it must be junk.

Re: do i need the oil cooler

All I know is, my 97SS Lt1 went to hell with 7000 on the tach. These were "really easy" miles too. Of course, I don't know if the optional oil cooler that came with the SS from SLP had anything to do with it, since I did havce a cam installed and heads ported, etc.

Probably the whole thing was the result of poor workmanship by the mechanic.

At any rate, I was able to see the debris in the oil cooler, so I don't know whether the debris was from the original cam installment and finally blocked the oil enough to spin the bearing or whether the debris came from the spun bearing when the engine went to hell.

Bottom line, when I had new block installed, the mechanic said he couldn't locate a new oil cooler, so I had the engine installed without it.

I do feel a bit more at ease without it in there though. Seems that if it gets debris in it and you don't clean the cooler when you change your oil that somethings bad might happen. I don't know. I am just giving you the dope on my experience.

Re: do i need the oil cooler

I want to remove my oil cooler too because the seal leaks so I rather remove it on my next oil change. What are some basic steps in removing this oil cooler.
Will my car run hotter?
What would I use the same filter? If not, what part #'s do I look for ?
Thanks in Advance!

Re: do i need the oil cooler

i was considering putting a oil cooler on my car until i read up on oil temperatures, appearently a hotter running ,good quality oil is better.... not sure of the recommended temp.
i think a oil pan with a larger capacity would be a better investment. do some reading before you decide

Re: do i need the oil cooler

I think if i remove my oil cooler my oil pressure will rise too and its an easy
way from getting out of repairing that oil leak from the oil cooler....

Re: do i need the oil cooler

I hope my oil pressure will rise after i remove the oil filter (if I ever find out how) IF the filter screen is plugged.
