Do I need to machine for valve springs?

Do I need to machine the heads for the Crane "H11" springs?

The website says I may need to machine the valve guides for retainer/lock clearance.

What is the spring O.D. dimension? The spring specs will be on the website of the spring mfr. Compare this to the pocket machined in the head. Obtain a retainer/lock asembly and install them with thevalve (minus the spring) in the head. Check the closed (valve) hgt., then check the hgt. at the point of retainer/guide contact. It be nice to have .06" clearance between the retainer and guide at full anticipated lift. If you are gonna do this yourself, ya gotta spend the time to do the checking. If what I just stated is 'greek' to ya, well, consider this a test to determine whether you should tackle the checking/measuring yourself, or let someone more familiar do it for ya.

Not sure what cam you are gonna be running but combination motorsports have a valve spring that can handle .600 lift with retainers that do NOT need maching. About 9 months back they were selling the whole kit for under 100 bucks. I installed them on my friend "Maldo" 97Z, he is running the 224/236 cam. He really likes them and has had no problems at all with those springs. (after 12K miles so far)

Hope that helps,
Claude
