Do I need to drill intake holes
Do I need to drill intake holes
I am in the process of putting together my buddys 383 with LE heads. They should have been milled .010 of an inch. I am not sure what the block was decked at but I know it was done. Well he bought a powder coated, ported intake. And the intake bolts are not lining up very well. Has anyone had this problem? What did you do to correct it? I was just going to drill the intake holes slightly larger. I am open for any suggestions. This project has been a costly nightmare from the begining, what should have taken a couple of day's is taking two weeks. I guess better to take it slow and make sure everything is just right than having problems later.

You need to see if the ports are inline on the top and bottom of the ports(sides too),before doing any drilling or cutting.
Re: Do I need to drill intake holes
I am glad you mentioned that but how can I check it? By the way the intake runners are not ported only the throttle body if it makes any differance. Thanks for the help.
Re: Do I need to drill intake holes
I ended up having to enlarge most of the holes/slots on the intake when my heads were shaved and the block was decked. I also found that the accessory bracket didn't line up at all and a couple of the holes had to be enlarged. It's best to check the fit of the bracket before you put the motor in the car if possible!
Re: Do I need to drill intake holes
Yeah one bolt on the ac/powersteering bracket did not line up. So the intake runners are ok and the holes for the bolts just need slight modifying, that is what I was wanting to here. Thanks guy's

Red on Red,
Check it with the gasket. Put it on the head and the intake and try to get a gasket that fits fairly close to check with. If it is out of line the intake will be setting higher than the head ports. This causes a step in the floor and roof which is not good for air flow.It will run but you are not getting the potential out of it.
You generally have to cut the heads or block more than .030 to have a problem. If you have to redrill the holes,be somewhat precise and use thick torque washers to cover up the enlarged hole. You can get these at any bolt house and are about 1/8" thick and don't look bad-- same thing ARP sends you with their bolts.
IMO you will be better off,if you have to drill, to just go larger with the hole like 7/16"-1/2" instead of trying to elongate it and before you install the intake make you some referance points with a center punch on the head and intake on all 4 corners to line up the ports as close as possible. With the big holes you will be able to move it WAY out of line.
