Do I absolutely need a 4 bolt block...

Here are the specs:
355 CID decked block
Mahle forged flat pistons (around 11.2 CR)
LE2 heads
Impala head gasket
LE 1.5 cam
ported intake
1.6 RR's
RK-sport headers
52mm
all bolt ons except e-water pump
rest in signiture.

Plan on spinning to 6500 RPM max.

Really trying to decide if I need to persue a 4 bolt block or just get ARP studs for my 2 bolt block. I understand that that the 4 bolt is never a waste, but if its overkill for my application I will pass. BTW I am hoping for around 400 HP to the wheels and I will never have any power adders.

If that's *all* you plan to do.. I'd say overkill.

But if you can get one cheap enough to start with, why not?

I would say 4 bolt mains are not neccesary, but if you have it stripped down they would make for added insurance. It also will allow you "room to grow" should you get the bug for even more power in a few years. Just my .02 cents

On another note: Your dyno numbers seem low to me. Especially for having a LT4 cam and 1.6 rr's and the fact you are a M6.

Dyno numbers are on bone stock LT1 camshaft.

I have some ARP main bolts, are the studs still stronger and the better way to go?

If you plan on spraying then definately get billet caps. Either two or four bolt. Just know it's a little spensive...

I will never have the spray or any other power adder.

Well here is the way I see it. NOS is out of the question.
If a blower with X amount of boost can co-exist with 11.2 compression ratio then I might go that route. I see that as being very unlikely.

the two bolt mains can handle up to 650 hp. so if you only want to make 400hp your fine.

For what you are doing.... 2 bolt mains wiht a stud kit will work ok. Just make sure their is enough bearing clearance, you use good oil and the balance is very good and you shouldn't have problems. A 4 bolt is always better though.

Stupid question.
What exactly is bearing clearance in detail please?

do a search on it.... bascially bearing clearance is the area between the crank and bearings. Its going to be in the .002-.004" range.
