Do automatics have rev limiters/fuel cutoff?
Do automatics have rev limiters/fuel cutoff?
I was driving back to my apartment today and I was in line with a Porsche and a Celica something or other. It had paint rims whatever, assumed the person likes to have fun with his car. Assuming he wouldn't launch, but rather go from a roll, I held the Camaro in 1st and then a Camry turned the corner in front of us just as we were going so I kind of punched it around the Celica but keeping my eye on the road I wasn't able to get out of first in time and my car made 2 popping noises right as I went to shift it. I'm assuming it was the fuel cutoff. Car still drives fine, haven't noticed any problems.
The factory rev limiter is at 5800 RPMs, and it affects spark, not fuel.
If you have a car with factory Z rated tires (150MPH speedo), your fuel cut-off is factory set at 155 MPH. If you don't have factory Z rated tires (120MPH speedo), your fuel cut-off is set at 110 MPH.

It's that damn CA gas!
Seriously, you probably touched the limiter. The trans is programmed to shift when engine hits a certain rpm, but your off-on the gas could fool it. If your '93 doesn't have a 4L60E (I don't remember), you could fool the mechanical linkage.
It's very unlikely that you harmed anything.
My C5 is programmed for a 1-2 shift just under the rev limiter. On a cold day, as in below 10F, the car accelerates so quickly in 1st that by the time the shift occurs the engine just touches the limter. Going to back that shift down 1 mph when I get around to it. By then it will probably be warmer and the car will be a little slower.
So you wasted the Celica, right?
