DIY TB and MAF porting

I was wondering how many of you have ported your tb or maf yourself. Give me a basic walkthrough on how you did it and if you were happy with the results. I am a little worried about doing the maf because of all this arguing about whether its good or not but i definentally can see some gains through porting the tb. I was wondering though when you port it, wont it prevent the blades from closing all the way and couldnt that bea problem?

Re: DIY TB and MAF porting

When you port a TB you need new blades and they are not round that is one of the hardest parts about it you are not likely to be able to do it at home and end up with good results. On the MAF if you think a rebored stock TB is sufficient then your stock MAF will be sufficient all you will accomplish is ruining the calbration and just from the fact that you asked this question I can tell you you do not have the knowledge to recalibrate the pcm for it yourself and it aint something easily done by email and then in the end it was not an air flow restriction anyway so all you did was make life difficult.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

I consider that high praise, thank you. Maybe people will begin to listen, I know many of the prominent and respected tech gurus get tired of answering these sorts of questions, but leaving them go unanswered doesn't educate anyone and people will try to spread the misinformation.

Re: DIY TB and MAF porting

Porting a TB would require Boring it at centerline with a high quality machine, making new eliptical blades, not detroying the shaft upon removal and installation, and proper positioning of the blades in the bores (hanging).

Porting the MAF is a no brianer and rather easy if you follow some of the guides online. I don't suggest it if you have access to any kind of tuning or are going to be more than a mild stock street car. Either situation, I would highly recommend against it as the readings are off by an immeasured amount and makes it very difficult to work with a baseline when it is unknown.

Re: DIY TB and MAF porting

shannon,
everyone passes this crap about eliptical blades, have you done the measuring??
i ran it through on a computer at work, using the stock blade geometry i came to only a .001 difference in height to the 90 degree cross section.

i bored a stock tb to a 52mm mono blade and edm'd about 8 blades up and they fit rather nicely.

so tell me how much of an elipse are you using and what is your closed blade angle?

Re: DIY TB and MAF porting

I read this and decided to port my MAF last night. It took me 2 hours to remove it from the car, cut the foils off with just a hacksaw blade, grinding it flat with a cutting wheel, grind it smooth all the way around with a sandpaper wheel, then hand wet sanded it with 400 grit, and reinstalled it back on the car. It seems QUIETER now that its on the car, but thats about it. I didnt go out and drive it or test it. It seemed like it also didnt want to rev as quickly. It's hard to tell though. I'll be getting a tune for it though, so i figure since i descreened it i mights as well port it.

So the recommendation in this thread that you don't port the MAF was not useful? If you get a dyno tune, you might be able to get the cailbration of the MAF tables corrected. Otherwise, it's almost impossible without repeated data logs and re-tunes or just dumb luck. That's why people recommend you don't destroy the stock calibration by porting.

I followed the masses years ago (when I was an f-body newbie) and ported my MAF. When it got to the point of me tuning the car, I went back to the stock MAF, as I could see in the data logs that the MAF readings were out of whack. Piddling with the MAF tables was just too time consuming. Most paid tuners will tell you the same thing.

Well i already descreened the MAF, so it was partially destroyed. This thread reminded me that it was something i wanted to do.
