disaster, crank ruined?

So late last night i was trying to put my hub/balancer on with the longer bolt to pull it on method. I must have crossed the threads somehow. It didn't go in very hard, but when I tried to get it out, it wouldn't budge. I was able to back it out by tightening it then loosening and repeating. Then it got to a point where it would spin easily, but it won't back out anymore. It makes squeaking noises (metal on metal) when i turn it. I am at a loss. It looks like its almost all the way out, but I can't figure out how to get it the rest of the way out. Is it possible i have just ruined the threads on the bolt and the crank is ok? Any help is appreciated.

It was a cheep soft bolt and it pulled the threads and gaulded. Ya might try putting pressure behind the head while unscrewing. Otherwise it will be cutting it off and drilling it out and ya got to be mighty careful NOT to mess up the crank threads any more than they are.
Ya may have enough good threads deeper in the crank hole to hold the balancer.

This might ease your worry or maybe not. I've had an LT1 350 running for 2 or 3 years now with the crank snout threads totally boogered up and it won't hold a crank bolt. So it's without bolt, boltless, sans-bolt, ......

It's my strongest and best LT1 350 and I have had no problems at all with the hub/damper. (dang thing is such a tight fit anyway).

I guess if you had a blower then things would not be good.

For future reference, thread a rod into the crank, then pull the hub into place using a nut with a bearing between the nut and the hub. This way you won't "tax" the crank threads.

Re: disaster, crank ruined?

Ended up getting it out the same way racerdude suggested. I looked all over town for a threaded rod with no avail. I chased the thread and got it on using harded bolts this time. Thanks guys
