different crank bolt question

I have tried searching and looking for what type of grade the existing bolt is. Is it grade 8 or is it something stronger? I noticed that it has a dark treated look to it compared to the grade 8 bolts that I have access to.

Also does ARP make us a crank bolt? That would be really nice.

(I had to hammer on a socket when removing mine and dont want to put my existing one back in)

Pretty sure it is a grade 8 (it should have 6 radial lines on the head). ARP should make a bolt.

Are you using the stock hub and balancer? When I installed my ATI damper the stock washer was way too small so I bought a ARP "balancer bolt kit" which included a bolt and new washer. Either way, you could order a package of ARP bolts in the size you need. 7/16X20

Yeah going to put stock hub and dampener back on. I was looking at the ARP kit that has the washer for SBC chevy for balancer. I am not sure if this is going to be the right length though.

I wouldn't go with a hardware store bolt for the crank hub. Just get a replacement at the Chevy dealer. Only costs a couple of bucks, and then you know it's the right part.

Thunder Racing sells the ARP bolt and it's awesome. It's got a huge 12 point head on it so you may need to buy a socket for it. You have to use the stock washer, though, as you have noticed.

The bolt in the kit is the same length as stock, just the washers are different. But its not bad to throw that big washer in your tool box, it may come in useful one day.

I looked, but dont see it. Do you have a link? Is this bolt interchangeable from LS1 to LT1?

The LT1 crank bolt is 1/2" x 20 and is therefore compatible with earlier small blocks and but not with the LS1. Be aware that the threaded depth of an LT1 crankshaft is slightly shorter than an earlier small block. It may be necessary to trim 1/8" or so from a standard ARP crankshaft bolt to avoid bottoming it out in an LT1 crank. Bottoming it out is not a good idea.

7/16"-20 x 2¼" to be exact (used with factory, thick washer).
