Dielectric grease

Are you supposed to use dielectric grease on the plug ends going to the opti? What happens if you have too much? I still haven't been able to figure out my car problems after the cam swap. So I have been doing a lot of thinking about what could be wrong. I know I was a little generous with the grease and the boots wanted to slip off after I had pushed them on the opti. I'm starting to think this may be the reason why it will not run right. What can I use to safely clean out all of the grease inside the boots?

And by the way I have just replaced the opti and it didn't help.

You can't have too much dielectric grease. Why don't you give us a history of the problem. I'm sure someone can jump in with a helpful suggestion.

I had the same problem, using too much di-electric, the opti boots kept popping off. I just went in with a paper towel and wipe aways as much as possible.

does the grease insulate spark in boot?

It is non conductive.
It promotes a good contact,by eliminating oxidation.

Since my last post I have sent my PCM out for programming. I should get it back tomorrow. I really don't think this will solve my problems. I just started thinking about the wires going to the opti seemed to want to slip off when I was pushing them on and thought that it might be one more thing to double check.

Re: Dielectric grease

Since you've been putting up with this problem FOREVER, why don't you put a scanner on it and see what the sensors are telling you real time???????

From what I've read in your other posts, why did you send your PCM out 2 times if you don't think it will solve anything????????

My personal feeling is you should go back to basics by checking a few things. First, put #1 on TDC by watching the relationship of the valve movement to the position of the piston. This will answer any questions regarding valve timing. Once the piston is at TD, remove the cap from the opti and be sure the rotor is point in the direction to where the contact is for the #1 cylinder. While you have the cap off, double check the wires for the corresponding cylinders are plugged in to the cap correctly.

After that start checking some running conditions like temperature of the header pipes at each cylinder to be sure each is firing. Check the fuel pressure while cruising. Check back pressure in the exhaust.

Now start scanning the sensors real time to see what they are reporting and compare them to expected values.

Re: Dielectric grease

Thanks for the advice Slopok. I have sent the PCM out for programming once when I got 3.73's installed last year and for the second time last week for the cam. It was going to need it done anyways and I thought it might help. It did help a little but the car still does not respond to the throttle like it should. It just doesn't want to rev up. I do not have a scanner. Any suggestions on a good one to buy?

The only ones in my opinion come from Snap-on. You can even get a used color graphing scanner.
