Died for no obvious reason...

Hey Guys

I have a 97 Z28 LT1. I was driving to work this morning and it died for no obvious reason. It tries to turn over, I can hear the fuel pump run when I turn the key, it has fuel pressure at the rails, spark at the coil is good, just to double check I checked the spark at cylinder 1...it's good, but it still will not start...what say you???

Thanks
337

Does it just crank strong and never start? Can you check the fuel pressure and not just that there is fuel coming out the schrader valve?

Scan it for codes. If there is a problem with the optical cam position sensor in the Opti, it shuts down the fuel system. Sets a code, but doesn't turn on the SES light. With the code for loss of low resolution signal from the sensor, the fuel pump will prime when you turn the key to on, shut down after 2 seconds as normal. When you crank the engine, after 2 crank revolutions without the low res signal, the fuel system shuts down.

Just one possibility. But the key here is scan it for codes and check the fuel pressure.

Has there ever been a bad opti without putting a code out?
I was just refering the op to my post to help him out but it seems these cars are falling
Apart on a daily basis just my observation that is all

The Opti has two parts. 1/2 is the cap and rotor (high voltage section). There are no codes related to the high voltage section. The other 1/2 is the optical cam position sensor. There are two codes related to failure of that sensor. So, yes an Opti can fail and not set a code. A good example would be the rotor falling off - no code for that.

Mine hasn't fallen apart on a daily basis, or a multi-yearly basis. I wouldn't extrapolate your specific problems to the entire population of these cars. Just my observation.

Thanks for the reply and your observation is kinda one sided
A car that died for no reason let alone any car that won't start falls in the same category
It wasn't a push to be negative it means I see a lot of repetivness and not just here on this site I have seen a lot of the same on other lt1/camaro forums.
So as a civil person back to topic

You're not giving the OP a clue. What post is he supposed to read?

BTW, 14-18 year old cars generally need some maintenance to keep them going.

I was assuming he would search my name or just for my current posts so my fault for assuming people do that now like I said before back to topic

Then back off and stop the arguing. You're screwing up his thread.

I did. I didn't find anything useful. You haven't solved anything that would be of any use.
