Died in the middle of traffic!

Driving along and all of the sudden it just died. Acting like the fuel pump again which has only been in there about four months this time. I let it sit, call a wrecker, come back and it starts right up. I drive the 2 miles to my office where it dies again coming in the driveway. Just surges and then stops running. The surge is like it has lots of power and then none, acted like I had to keep pressing the gas but then it would want to go like a bandit and then it would die.

I'm pretty frustrated. Double races this weekend for points and I am clusted in the top four in Street (out of 40) and the top 16 in Modified (out of 140). I am now waiting for a wrecker to take it to the dealer. The first wrecker showed up and I told him the only way he would be towing my car backward would be if he didn't mind buying me a new front end.

Any ideas?

Today it did receive a new starter and new line lock but I fail to see the relationship between those chnges and the current problem.

odd. check fuel pressure, if its ok.. its not the pump.

check for trouble codes, if there are none.. it sounds VERY opti like.. but as we all know, other stuff can do it also

Cool

with surging like you describe my guess is it's either fuel pump related or intake vacuum related

good luck

that sux man. i had the same thing happen once when my opti went bad and something similar happened about a week ago when my stupid MSD 6al fried on me. I unhooked the MSD and the car is running great. like Jordan said, check the fuel pressure first.

i totally agree with jordon....my car ran completely fine and then ran like utter crap when my opti was going. it would cycle back and forth between the two. best part is...when we scanned it everything looked perfect .

Do you have an after market ignition box? My last Crane box (their previous design) would cause my car to die and then after a few minutes it would restart. This occurred about 5 times before I yanked it and replaced it under warranty. Haven't been stranded with the new design box yet (about 15K miles).

I disconnected the MSD box with no change. The ICM was replaced two months ago. I am waiting to find out about any codes but I suspect they won't find any. With two races this weekend I am rather stressed.

Fuel pump is toast (again). Only been in there four months. Of course there isn't one in the state so the wife is driving 2 1/2 bours one way to pick one up.

Do you run with 1/4 tank or less when racing? If so, you may be starving the pump on takeoff and braking, which will burn it out a lot faster.
