did i blow the opti???

ok so 2 days ago i decided to detail my engine bay.....so i cleaned everything and brushed with a toothbrush and dish soap....after that i soaked the engine and surrounding areas in degreaser...and after that i washed everything with a garden hose and spray nozzle. when i started the car i noticed i was very low on gas and that it was backfiring and kinda idling weird...so i let it dry out for 2 days figuring i must have soaked a filter or something...today i filled it up with gas from a gas can and started it and now its still backfiring and it has an abnormal idle..car has 103k miles and everything is stock to my knowledge........does this sound like i [EDIT] up my opti? where is the opti located in the engine bay because i sprayed the front area alot....if it is my otpi what is a good one to buy.....also i don't think my engine light is on but im not sure...ill double check when i get back home.. please guys help my camaro is my baby and now it sounds and runs like [EDIT]

Garden hose? Using pressurized water out of a garden hose on a modern fuel-injected engine is a good way to ruin parts.

The opti is located on the front of the engine beneath the waterpump. Being that you don't have a vented setup (94), in all likelihood, you've fried it. You MIGHT get lucky by letting it dry out, but it doesn't seem to be your case.

WTF! Why would you do that!? LT1 are notorious for the bad design of the Cap and Rotor getting wet and easily misfiring!! My Camaro Z28 is beautiful inside and outside, but when you open up the hood. I have a Dirty LT1, Ill rather have the engine dirty then to drown it with water and ruin the Opti.

agree with ramair, in any case ull need to pull the stuff off to dry the one u have right and its not fun sooo if the opti is old u would be better off getting a new one. gm/ac performance is a good opti. msd makes a good one but its pretty spendy and some guys have had problems with them. good thing with the msd is the warrenty. at least from sumit its 2 yrs. it would be a good time to switch to a vented opti. make sure u did not get the ecu wet. its in the cubby to the back of the passenger side wheelwell.

the msd i got has a kit with it to switch to the vented style. one hose went to the existing vacuum line for the egr and the other went to the intake elbow. there should be a sticky on the switch for the oem style here somewhere do a search im sure it will come up.

There's a writeup on a Corvette site that shows you how to "vent" an OEM/Delphi vented Opti. Not a bad idea, for $225 less that the MSD.

An MSD Opti is an MSD. I'm not aware of various kinds of MSD Optis, other than the different drive mechanism used in the 93-94 models vs. the 95-97 models.

the advantage is the vent. alows you to use a hotter coil for one. the spark in the hotter coil produces more gasses that attack the opti reader stuff.
how to vent an opti

you can make your own but this is what the vacuum harness looks like
