Diagnose this MID RPM stumble......
Ok, my bro picked up a 94 TA 6 speed, "BLAKBIRD" on here. The retards at the place where he got it from steam cleaned the engine. So he takes it out for a test drive and it is stumbling MISERABLY from ALL rpm's.....great i think...they got water into the optispark and fried it. So I explain to the salesman about the optispark and what can happen if you get moisture into the unit. He agrees that its not right and says they will fix it. Well, my brother calls the next day at noon, and they say they have already fixed it, it was just the spark plugs, they changed them out and the car is fine.
So, reluctantly, my brother talks me into going back with him to look at the car again. Surprisingly, the stumble seems to be gone. Great im thinking, guess whatever got in there dried up afterall. So he buys the car and on the way home it seems to be down on power. I tell him to take it up to redline and see how it acts, and when he does....it starts to breakup at about 5,000rpm. Like he is hitting a rev limiter. $hit I think.....guess the situation WASNT fixed after all. It is becoming worse now as time goes by. Car starts perfectly fine, and if you keep it at a reasonable RPM, drives fine as well. BUT, if you get it to anything over about 38-3900 rpm it just breaks up. Sounds like he is hitting a rev limiter, car WILL NOT spin any higher than that.
Sooooo, most obvious gremlin would be the optispark....because of the whole steam cleaning debacle. When mine went though it had a low rpm stumble like when you would roll into the gas slowly at around 2000-2500rpm. This situation is a bit baffling to me because as I said earlier, it runs fine at anything under the specified breakup RPM.
What could it be? I did basic maintenance stuff when we got the car home from the dealer. Oil, 02 sensors, fuel filter, oil, cleaned out his K&N filter. Made sure the elbow wasnt crimped on the bottom of the throttle body. Also I read about a thread similar to this where the guys IAT sensor was bad and the car ran fine after he unplugged it. This did nothing as well. I cant see any arching on the spark plug wires or any signs that a wire might not be connected right, or severed insulation on a wire. Was thinking about trying some small stuff first like replacing the coil and pulling the plugs to see what they look like. Sorry this is so long guys, ANY suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Re: Diagnose this MID RPM stumble......
Sounds like you hit it. The opti seems to be what I think it is. I'd go back to them and make them replace the opti. They say they repaired it when they didn't. They got to cover that. It was a defect that they say they repaired. It's their responsibility.

Well guys....called dealership, it happens to be a small one (non GM) in Winchester VA called Gasoline Alley Auto sales. Supposedly the warranty only covers internal engine parts and they wont touch it. Soooo, I guess I have an optispark replacement ahead of me.......since my bro has no experience with these cars. Guess I'll get him and electric H20 pump while im in there.
