destroyed timing set and cam.....

Well, I dont know how, but my cam sheered the 3 bolts off of the timing gear....

First off, you can see there is alot of metal shavings and teeth that got torn off the water pump drive. I am assuming they are all in my oil pan.......
What should I inspect? Where can the teeth have gotten too?

For the replacement parts.......
I have a 93 Z28, mostly stock. Cai, Magnaflow, hi-flo cat.
I dont have a torque converter, and cant get one at this time.
The rear end has 3.23's. What cams are could for me?

I am planning on buying:

Timing set -----> will this work with the ewp? cloyes single roller

Elec water pump ----> CSR

Cam.....suggestions? CC503 since I dont want to rev too high?

Springs .....dont know what to get either

1.6RR --------> Will these work? proform

pushrods -----> The CompCams $37 set

what else will I need?
any other advice?

if your motor was still going when this happened you more than likely have some bent valves.i would pull the heads for sure and get them checked out.

you are going to need a gasket set also, summit has them for about $65 and they will do the front and the lower all in one kit.you will need new head gaskets too once you pull the heads.

The cam was still connected to the timing gear by the little rod thingy......but it was flopping around like crazy.

I really dont want to pull the heads..........argh. Is there any way to check for bent valves without pulling the heads?

you can do a leak down test and it will tell you if the valves are ok

looks like you have a decent oil leak.

I have the same grimy gunk on the front of my block.

I thnk what you have here is an effect not a cause.

I would look for the cause otherwise you are going to have more problems when it goes back together.

I would echo the pull the heads comments, at the VERY least I would want to stick a boroscope in the plug holes and see if there are contact marks on the pistons but really I would say pull the heads.

I agree that this is an effect....something had to cause enough force to shear those bolts.

Pull the heads, odds are you'll be pulling them later if you don't.

pull the heads, even if they're fine you can still get them ported or at least bigger valves put in.

as for the cam the cc503 will work fine.

Don't be lazy. Do it right or you'll be doing this again soon and trashing new parts in the meantime.

I did put an underdrive pulley on not long ago.......maybe 3 weeks ago......
Is it possible it could have not been balanced properly? Looking at the sheer pattern on the bolts, it looks like one failed, and the stress on the other two slowly sheered them off. The engine was making good power up to the point of hearing the clunking of the timing chain....

if you removed the damper and just installed the under drive pulley then that is what caused the cam bolts to break. when i bought my car it had an underdrive pulley on it and i didn't know it but the guy before me installed it and removed the damper, 2000 miles after having the car the same thing happened to me broke all three bolts. it bent 14 of the 16 valves in my heads. i didn't know much about the car when i bought it else i would have known that it didn't have a damper on it. what i can say to you is do alot of reading on this web site before you install parts on your car, you can do a search on just about every part that they make for the lt1 on this web site.

I have a compression test gauge......if I test with that and all is well.......does that mean the valves are good?
