descreening maf
descreening maf
I want to descreen my maf because it is an easy thing to do and i have a moroso air intake. I figure the honeycomb, while engineered for use on our cars really can slow the air down. I heard that removing this screen would cause problems without special tuning.
I was wondering if it would be alright to run my car without the maf screen and if it would hurt or help anything.

Re: descreening maf
I descreened mine last year. I didnt have any problems at all with it not running right. I have heard that it helps a tiny bit but not really enough too notice. I have a differant MAF now and I left the screen in it bc i didnt really think it made much of a differance to take it out. Its really your call.
Re: descreening maf
If you're planning on just removing the screen you could go ahead and do it. If you plan on porting the MAF ends as well be VERY careful when handling the sensor and be sure to put it somewhere out of harm's way. Although there is no SOTP difference when doing this, I could have sworn I heard a difference when I first started it up after doing the MAF descreen and port & polish
Overall though I agree with Z95m6, the small difference you *might* see by doing this isn't worth the damage you could inflict on your MAF or the risk of it getting dirty.

Re: descreening maf
Descreening can throw off the maf. or it may not. Depends on how the air is flowing into the maf. If its coming in very turbulent (just after a bend) the sensor may report inaccurate readings for what is really passing through the maf.
With the screen on it virtually eliminates the turblance before the maf allowing the sensor to pickup reading more reliably.
You can push a lot of HP through a stock maf w/filter. Yes it flows better with it off, but it MAY or MAY NOT work accuratly at all times with it removed.

Re: descreening maf
Descreening at best can provide minor TEMPORARY gains at worst it can screwup your idle and make tuning just a slight bit more difficult, leave it alone. As for porting it completely ignore any and all advise from anyone who suggests such a thing. All it accomplishes is completely destroying the calibration of a presicion meter.
Re: descreening maf
Do it. I'd say all this talk about turbulance and so on, IMO is just too much--it does basically nothing. I'd say at best it gives protection from the big junk that sometimes goes in if a filter drops off or is on wrong, and second best maybe a little smig of fuel economy. The placement of the MAF is right in the straight section of the intake....the air will not be very turbulant by the time it sees the MAF(depending on specific inake). You will see no gain....except in your head, and that is a gain that' worth it in my opinion
. How you feel is all that matters. Just do it, nothing bad will happen to your car. Your car will idle and run just like it did before.
I always thought you wanted turbulance in your intake, What about those tornados......As Seen On T.V........lol

Re: descreening maf
Each car can react differently from the other on something like this. I had no problems whatsoever, and my car has specific tuning. Its up to you, but there is not much risk associated with it. If you removie it carefully and by that i mean actually taking the entire MAF sensor off and gently pushing it out instead of stabing it with a screw driver and pulling it out like I did you can always put it back on if you notice it adversely affecting the car.
Re: descreening maf
^LOL
just take it out carefully with the steel ring retainer, in other words don't just rip it out. You have to remove the steel ring around the edge that holds it in. That way if she acts up put it back in real easy.

Re: descreening maf
A descreened MAF can definitely lead to part throttle knock. My MAF was descreened by a shop without my knowledge, and it took us forever to figure out what was causing it. Popped the screen back in and it's been fine ever since.
If you feel the need to remove it anyway, be careful and monitor it for awhile with a scantool. It's really quite silly though, you risk damaging a very expensive part and you'll get no measureable gain from it.

Re: descreening maf
The screen is needed to evenly distribute air across the meter so it can accurrately measure the air intake and then accurately deliver the right amount of fuel. If the air is not measured accurrately, there no way to accurrately determine the right amout of fuel...hence a poorly tuned vehicle that will probably make less power than with the screen. More air is good only when the computer knows its getting more air and can accommodate with additional fuel.

Tornados are worthless, I put one on my car and noticed absolutely no difference ( not ever mileage)
