The screen is there to insure the air flow is uniformly distributed over the open area of the sensor, to provide for calibration over a wide range of flows, from idle through WOT.

In the early models, you can remove the screen by simply prying a thin spring ring out from behind it. That way, if you remove it, and don't like the results, you can put it back in. Not sure if the screen can be removed this way in a 97.

I've seen removal cause a loss of fuel economy or up to 2.5MPG, or to cause a slightly rough idle. Other people see nothing. Some people see near-miraculous SOTP increases in "throttle response". I seriously doubt the screen offers that much resistance to flow in a moderately modified engine.

I descreened mine and no ill effects have come from it, my MPG isn't what it should be, but it was like that before the MAF descreening. I didn't notice a SOTP gain, but throttle response was a little quicker and my engine got a little louder at WOT. Mine didn't set any codes or anything though.

i descreened and ported my maf when i first got my car and wanted to do some mods to it. After i got a scanmaster i saw it messed my BLM's all up so i now have a stock, screened MAF back in my car.

Leave it in. I hate hearing about how people "gained a HUGE SOTP feeling from it" or "it had to add at least 10 hp!". That's BS.

No kidding, at most you can try descreening it & you might gain a bit of HP at WOT & like 6k rpm, but for everyday driving you'll loose mid range power/fuel economy, & with a big cam I notice the cam surge is minimal with a screen.

Leave it.

BTW, I think 96+ is when the screeen is epoxied in, before that it was just a c-clip.

Run 1 with stock screened MAF 275.8rwhp
run 2 descrened 278.9rwhp
run 3 descreened, 277.1 RWHP

Right now I'm makin 302.9rwhp and the a/f is dead on with my tuning, so I see no side effects of descrening it, I gained 3rwhp by descrening it.
