Run 1 was with the screen in, 2-3 was with it out. A free 2-3 HP sounds good to me.

Good info, Jeff! I had not known this was dyno'd on a higher hp car before. Thanks for sharing.

I don't have screens in any of my LT1s. Well, maybe there is one in the one I just picked up and if there is, I'll have to take that sucker out too

Hell just remove the whole MAF and replace it with one of those 6" ricer mufflers.....

Heres a link I just found explaining some of it in more detail...

Heres another link?

The screen DOES cause a restriction, but on most non-heavily modded cars it does almost nothing to remove it...

Secondly, by removing the screen it may or may not hurt performance. If your intake is straight enough, if you're using a cone type intake and the pipes are smooth and straight there will be little or no turbulence so you can be fairly confident that the flow will be somewhat laminer and because of the screen restriction it will flow better.
Aftermarket parts will assume flow going into the sensor is straight and even. It's not really their problem, the sensor does work as designed. Its cheaper to make it without a screen, and it does flow better. Whether the air is flowing evenly over it or not is up to the intake infront of it. Do they really care if their customers don't know this? Probably not, my guess is that the MAF's get sold based on their Flow #'s and how cheap they can make em.

I hope this makes sense, it does to me I just don't think it's worth messing up on.

I'm pretty sure the vette's don't have the screen so as long as you don't break one of the 2 little wires in the back of the MAF, there's no reason it should make the car run rough. Seeing as how much aftermarket MAF's cost, you can get at least half of those gains for free just taking out the screen. That and TB bypass, and that should be worth 8 or so hp, not bad considering some catbaks won't free up that much power.

Only the 02+ Z06s do not have the MAF. It supposedly gains about 5HP.

Don't do it. The benifits that it provides on a lightly modified car hardly outweighs the risk involved by removing it.

Do any of you guys who removed yours, still have it laying around and don't mind parting with it? The previous owner removed it and I would like to see how the car would react to one being on it.

My opinion.. take it out and try it, if you don't like the way it runs, put it back in[or if you ever get a 'mail order' tune..
Mine's out and been out for over 2 years.. no prob at all..
of course it isn't going to give you a SOP gain..

But it does hurt . Leave the screen in and port it if you want but
you will have to redo the maf tables for the increased flow.

Let me weigh in on this with some real world info (a light went off in my head just now). I have a '95 LT1/A4/2.73 gears with the following mods-homemade CAI, CSI electric WP, Hooker LT's with Flowmaster catback. My best run stock was 14.2, the next week after my homade CAI plus a transgo shift kit I was at 13.8@101MPH. Not shabby for an A4 with 2.73's. A Hooker LT swap/CSI waterpump install netted me 13.59's at 102 MPH. Notice the lack of a MPH increase, its actually less than 1 MPH. The faster ET's are due to less low end torque and better 60 foots with the Hooker LT's. My car only has 60k miles on it and the valve covers have never been off. One bizarre thing......first I never picked up much from the "best mod you can do" the Hookers, second my car runs WAAAAAAAY rich. I'm talking my pipes are coal black inside and if I romp on the gas I get a good amount a black smoke. My O2's are fine, in fact the car gets almost 30MPG on the highway. I've had the car scanned and nothing shows up. Now I read this thread and it hits me...on "free" mod I did was remove the MAF screen. My CAI pipe is a ribbed dryer vent, which would probably cause MAD turbulance. Don't laugh that little mod dropped about .4 seconds and 3 MPH. However now I'm thinking this pig rich condition COULD be caused by my removing the MAF screen. I can't remember WHEN I took it out, but I still have that sucker. I'll be putting it back in.......is anyone curious to see what happens with my rich condition?? If my 1/4 times are differant?? Sad to say the Hooker LT's are coming off before I can get it to the track most likely, have to comply with emissions here now. I'm just now very curious about this "free" mod. Did is cost me some ET's??

************UPDATE***************

I put my screen back in.......shock #1- My MAF was in BACKWARDS. I dunno when I did this but it could explain why sometimes my car ran nasty, I blamed a failing optispark. So I put the screen back in and disconnected the battery for a bit. Started her back up, it SEEMS to have sharper throttle response. When it was cold before it always had a little miss right when you hit the gas. I dunno it could be in my head. I have a new definition of torture, I wanna drive the car and see how it feels, but its been raining here for two days and driving an FBody in the rain isn't fun. GRRRR
