Talking Delteq Opti-Direct ROCKS!!!

Holy ****! I am soooo glad I got the Opti-Direct instead of another Optispark cap and rotor.

The car feels like new again and the extra power made it easy for me to spot an exhaust leak I've been suspecting. It's the manifold, so now I've got an excuse to splurge on headers. hehe

I'm a total n00b when it comes to the ignition system. I've never replaced spark plugs, wires, coil, Opti, etc. It took me 10 hours to do the install on my 93 M6. Running wires on the passenger side in factory position slowed me down big time. Moving the AIR and running the wires was definitely my least favorite parts of the job. To run wires on the passenger side, just remove the belt and torque down on the belt tensioner with one hand while messing with the wires using your other hand. Also in regards to the passenger side, feed the cables under the throttle body and it'll pretty much go down next to the alternator all on its own. Once you get those wires on the plugs, start pulling the slack from the back forwards. 1) pull slack, 2) clip the plastic retainer, and 3) repeat further up. It's a lot easier to do it like that than it is to try and guess how much cable slack you're going to need.

In any case, the car ran like a f*ing champ for about 10 minutes. Then all of a sudden, I hear this ticking sound and the car feels sluggish. Yeah, a wire shot right off a spark plug. It was the rear drivers side which is the first one I did. I suspect I didn't push it on all the way because it wasn't until I did the first few wires that I realized they make a clicking sound as they snap into place. Tomorrow morning I'll hook it back up and take pictures of the install. Everything was run in a clean way so it's looking nice and pretty.

Next weekend I'll be installing a CSR electric water pump (The new version) to replace the camshaft driven POS that I suspect was leaking on my opti. Should free up a few ponies as a bonus.

Congrats on the install. The Delteq system is pretty sweet.

Re: Delteq Opti-Direct ROCKS!!!

How old were the plugs, wires, opti, coil on there before?
Not saying the Delteq is bad just that if comparing it to worn parts which most people do(with everything noy just this) then the same gains may have been realized with fresh stock parts. Most people these days are so infuenced by marketting that there is little objectivity left.
Case in point old wires would be much more suceptible to missfire from being wet from a weeping WP than the new wires you just ran, and waterpumps are a WEAR ITEM and just because a mechanical part wears out does not make it a POS it only makes it worn out and in need of replacing. Which even your wonderful new electric pump will be subject to after time and miles, and when it goes it will be instant none of the weeping warning a mechanical gives you.

Re: Delteq Opti-Direct ROCKS!!!

Wow, Dwayne. Do you hand out pennies for halloween? It may hurt you to hear this, but I'm still excited as hell about the Opti-Direct and the upcoming electric water pump install.

Regarding the water pump, from what I understand, the electric water pump won't weep, will keep things cooler for around town driving and I'll definitely know when it dies 5,500 hours or so later. This is something for me to be excited about.

I've had my Optispark replaced two times prior. One of those times, the wires weren't replaced because they were replaced two months before the opti replacement and didn't help any. Once the opti was replaced, voila. It ran like new again. I know what it feels like when my Opti is going. Now I know this may be hard to believe, but the system feels more powerful than it ever has since I bought the car 6-7 years ago. This thing has almost 190,000 miles on it from the prior owner and my prior commutes. The power increase is for two reasons. For one, the system is now running properly. Secondly, the coils put out a stronger spark than the stocker. When I went out for a test drive, I was basically looking for something wrong like the burning smell of the belt rubbing against the wires. All I found was that exhaust leak which I've suspected for some time. I gunned it a few times and can tell you with 100% objectivity that it was a huge SOTP difference compared to the last two years before the opti started stumbling on me. Off the line I have power instead of having to wait until I'm at a roll to get my horsepower. That in and of itself a HUGE difference. I'm not saying that the Opti-Direct vs a proper running Optispark is a huge difference. What I'm saying is that I've spent so much time running on a dying opti and money replacing it with yet another non-vented opti that this system is a miracle for me and others with a 93-94 model. I'm saying that there is a noticable small difference in power between 100% working optispark and opti-direct systems.

Where can I find the Delteq and all that I'll need? I'm thinking about ditching the 195k mile original opti in my 94 Z before I get a new engine.

I got the barebone kit and ignition wire set from www.elitesparkplugs.com. I got the ignition module and coils from a guy on Ebay that seems to get a dozen at a time. His name on there is aphindustries and he's got some for sale right now. Total cost for everything after shipping was about $600.

I'll have to keep this in mind for when my opti goes.

Delteq is a great system. Easy install, clean set-up. I didnt see any performance gains but it did fix my miss After replacing 2 optis (1 for optical pickup and 1 for cap/rotor) I decided it was time to try something new. I have never looked back since. Congrats on the install

Re: Delteq Opti-Direct ROCKS!!!

FYI the ONLY way the Delteq will stop an ignition misfire is if the rotor inside the optispark broke... which is only 1 of several ways an opti can fail. Bad bearings and failing optical sensors seem to be more common and youll still need these for the Delteq to function properly.

Now if the rotor fails, the opti will not work at all. The rotor is the spark distributor so without it the spark has no place to go. No spark will exit the opti under any circumstance. A misfire after 10 minutes of running isnt a rotor problem.. its something else.

Like the coolant system developing enough pressure to start weeping out the weep hole causing wet old ignition wires and the miss?

Doesn't hurt me at all to hear you are happy with a mod just still believe people look at things with FAR FAR too little objectivity.
