Delteq low on power?

Hey guys,

A few weeks ago the TA started all of a sudden dropping cylinders, all within a few mile drive. I ordered a Delteq and heres why: Where the car was I had limited tools, I couldnt get any coolant on the ground, if I were to tow it to the other house it would cost more than the difference between a regular Opti and Delteq, Ive read about replacement Optis not lasting (GM ones too... seems like alot of them go at 3k), Ive been thinking about a Delteq for a while, etc, etc... I figured it to be a ignition problem because that many plugs would not go at the same time, and ruled out fuel pressure because the car responded fine to throttle. (If you guys want more info let me know).

I installed the Delteq system and the car runs again, I did not change plugs but I did tighten them down. (#8 was pretty loose)

Ive read about alot of people saying they could feel a difference in performance with the Delteq, some say you can see the smoke of what was previously unburned, etc... I feel like I actually lost power (not just me either, my dad said same thing), the car runs fine except whereas before it really threw you into the seat it kind of lacks that now... Also instead of jumping RPMs it sorta climbs them (hard to explain, before I would always have the power there without needing to smash the peddle to the floor, now it seems I have to smash it and wait for the power to come).

Ive emailed Delteq but no reply. Has anyone else had issues like this? Any recommendations? (Im thinking I should do a plug change, but dont know if that would get me my power back).

Thanks in advance.

What plug wires are you using? Have you checked the continuity of them? Did you put the wires together yourself?

Plug wires are ones that came with the kit from Delteq (I ordered the whole Valve Cover mount kit from them). I have not checked the continuity of them. My father suggested pulling the plug wire from the cylinder (where it attaches to the coil) I believe to be not running (not sure if any of them are "Dropped", idles pretty well) and see if it affects the idle, I am thinking of doing it with #8 because the plug was pretty loose but Im not at the car right now.

Re: Delteq low on power?

Well one possibility is a burnt or damaged plug wire. I had this happen to mine when I was still running spark through the opti. One of the wires touched the serp belt and it wore a spot through the outer jacket. This let the wire arc to anything around it. The driving characteristics seemed normal under most driving conditions, but it was down on power under full throttle, and when in high gear (6th) and high load, there was a very noticeable miss.

Yeah I was worried about where the come close to the belt, but Ive kept on checking in that area and they seem to be fine... Do you think its possible that the #8 plug is damaged due to it being loose?

The plug is likely fine, but go through all of them and tighten them down, check the one in questions though (at a minimum).

Loose plugs will cause a down on power syndrome too.

We did a dyno test before and after on the Delteq installed on my car and there was no difference at all and I take the car up to 7200 rpm. Trust me, I was hoping there would be. Same was true for a MSD a few years ago. No gains at all.

Always had a problem with this unscientific stuff where it "feels" and people post gains with no proof. There can be a very significant difference in the weather on any two days that will either slow ya down or make ya go faster. We just had a cold front go thru and a number of the members of the club I belong to were talking about how much better there cars were running.

If you have a baseline dyno pull you need to put it on the dyno to see where you're at and scan it to see if anything shows up. It really is more of a science than an art. Delteg does not make any performance gain claims at all and that’s probably why they didn't get back to you.

Hey thanks for the reply, and I understand how those "I feel a gain" thing can be... But I really think I am missing some power and just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced it and if theres any recommendations.
