First suggestion would be to make sure you know what the EGR system and AIR pump, and other AIR components look like, so you can explain exactly which pieces you are having a problem with.

OK

For some reason I've suddenly got the urge to remove AIR, but not EGR.

Now, I've been searching through the forum and reading the guides and what not, and am still uncertain as to the exact specifics of everything. I need two 18mm oil drain plugs to block off the holes on the exhaust manifolds? And two vacuum caps for the intake and intake manifold?

Here's a picture: http://ignitersoftware.com/camaro/Image1.gif

Now, there you will see shoebox's lovely photography skills. On the top left I have an arrow pointing to where I believe the oil drain plugs screw in. Tell me if that's right.

Then in the rest of the sections in that picture I have highlighted every part of the AIR system that needs to be removed. Is that all correct... what's highlighted?

So I just need to rip that stuff out of there, along with the AIR pump, the bracket it mounts to, and the solenoid "module" with it's little vacuum lines? I just want to be sure I know everything before starting this.

Thanks guys!

Need M18 drain plug for 96-97.

3/4" vacuum cap.

EGR blockoff plates.

And a small vacuum cap for the fitting on the intake manifold (vacuum source for EGR solnoid). I forget what size, but it's pretty small like a 1/8" vacuum cap.

Have PCM reprogrammed (OBD2).

What vendor is the best source for the EGR block-off plates?
Thanks!

My block off plates are home made 1/8" thick polished stainless steel. You're more than welcome to use my dimensions.

Here is a website that sells them:

or you can just make them yourself like AsianSensation said.

[B]Go back and reread my last post. The '96 LT4 Grand Sport Corvette had NO EGR from the factory. GM Powertrain deemed the overlap on the LT4 cam as enough to make an EGR system unnecessary.

Does this also apply to the LT4 Hot Cam?

Sorry to see no body talking about the function of the sys to understand the effect of deleting it.

exhaust-gas recirculation:

(EGR) An emission control system where some of the exhaust gases are rerouted from the exhaust manifold into the combustion chamber to make sure that all fuel is burned before entering the atmosphere. The process lowers the combustion temperature and reduces the formation of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) in the exhaust.

If it lowers the combustion temperature, that means if it's removed, higher temperatures will be reached. That translates to more compression and hence more power.

I don't think that really matters since the EGR doesn't operates under WOT like Fred stated. Power isn't really important while in crusing mode.

A more important side benefit of the EGR system is the fact that it reduces the tendancy of the engine to detonate under "lugging" conditions.... i.e. - too much throttle in too high a gear.
