Daily Driven 383

Who is doing it n/a and what kind of bottom end did you go with?

I might be going Eagle or Callies... not sure yet. Leaning towards the Eagle setup because its cheaper, unless everyone thinks its much more cost effective to upgrade and get the Callies Dragonslayer, rods, and srp pistons

Looking for about 400-420rwhp (LE2 setup on top).

Daily driven, traveling back and forth to school (25 miles each way). Stop and go traffic when around town.

What do you guys think?

It's really going to boil down to what kind of heads & cam you're going to use.

My buddy has a 383 forged rods cast crank and runs 417RWHP through an A4 and he drives it daily. IMO unless you are going to spray or go FI a cast crank is just fine. If you are set on going forged go Eagle.

Re: Daily Driven 383

Mine is not a daily driver but also not a drag car in any way. I set it up for street so it's very driveable. I opted for a forged bottom end (see sig link for details if interested) because I'm planning to throw a blower on in a year or so. Besides the minor cam surge under 1,500 RPM from the cc306, the car runs very smooth almost like stock except waaay more power -- thanks in part to the McLeod ST.

Well I know the Callies stuff is better then the Eagle, but i'm just wondering if they'll both be totally cool with the street and being daily driven. Apparently the Eagle is. The Callies setup is about $400 more but handle a lot more power if I ever wanted it too.

I think A forged Eagle bottom would take whatever you could throw at it really. I have seen more than a few bottom ends using eagle parts holding upwards of 650hp....how much more do you think you need?

Re: Daily Driven 383

I bought my 383 kit from a very reputable engine building shop. They say I should be safe to 1000 HP. I opted for the huge 1/2" rod bolts which I was told were a b!tch to clearance. My long-term goal is around 800-900 HP with a good SC, undecided yet to which one.

Re: Daily Driven 383

Well... I hope one day I can go FI and be at about 600rwhp daily driven. So i'm thinking about my future in the car. I know Callies can handle a sick amount of power.

Re: Daily Driven 383

Callies crank, Oliver 5.85" billet steel rods, JE pistons...10 years of 11s, 1500 mile road trips, and daily drives. No worries here. A bit pricey, but no one has touched the bottom end of my motor since 1995 either...

Small Joe Overton cam (.568" lift 226/234 @ .050), E.B. Porting freshening the old LPE heads...400 rwhp and 430 rwtq and its not tuned yet...

Re: Daily Driven 383

Chris....

A LE2 383 setup should be nice and tame for what you are looking to do on the daily driver.

In terms of cranks you do get more of what you pay for with a Callies, the DragonSlayer in the shop now is amazingly consistant journal to journal in size... the mains are all within .0001" on size (1-4).... the Eagles I measure are usually in .0002-3" in comparison... either way the block is going to determine the bearing clearances more than the crank will most times. I still see Eagle Forged cranks take stupid power and win lots of races a the local circle tracks going 7500rpm+.

If you are going to a 4-Bolt... well then I would look at a Forged crank. If not I would look at a Scat or a Eagle Cast. Later on you are going to go with new pistons for the blower motor anyways and maybe a rod length change... so it might be better to get another block, sell what you have for a NA motor and build the blower motor. Since IMHO used pistons out of a motor are worth about the standard scrape rate per pound you get at the junk yard, or expensive ashtrays.

The big deal here with your bottom end in terms of part selection is really pistons. The compression ratio shouldn't be maxxed out here, 11:1 would be perfect IMHO for what you are trying to do... problem is with a 53-58cc chamber, ain't any good off the shelf pistons to do that. We could probably find something for ya though.

OTHO it's good to see the LE cam specs aren't out. ;-)

Re: Daily Driven 383

The only thing that i'm worried about is my studded mains... think that'll be a problem? I can't splay it because I need to get this motor done because my daily driver is currently broken (Cause for 383)

I don't beat on it, but I will race it. Will be shifting at about 6300

Re: Daily Driven 383

If you are doing a 2 bolt.... do a cast crank. No point to it being strong since you have the block being the weakest link there.
