D@mn Crank Hub!!!

I need to know quickly. Will a stock 1995 Z28 crank hub fit on my 1997 Z28 with the timing cover ON and without modifying anything??? I haven't driven my F***ING car for 6 months and there is only about 2 hours worth of work to get it all back together, I'm having HUGE trouble trying to find a grade 8 threaded rod to get the hub back on. I am about to send my keyed 95 hub back to thunder racing cause I'm NOT REMOVING my timing cover ever again if I can help it. Please help!! I understand that the 95 stock hub requires a different key or something??

The 95s are keyed? I didnt know that. My 94 isnt keyed. I wish it was though. Are you saying that your 97 crank isnt keyed but the hub you bought is?

i would take timing cover off it's allot faster i hate to tell you, so your saying the hub doesnt go back on the crank i hate that also i got tired and grinded the hub and finally went in! i would get a longer bolt and mybe put a washer or nut and slowely push it back on then take the longer bolt off and put your original back on a good hardware should have the bolt. goodluck! just a suggestion

well I read somewhere that all the LT1 crank hubs have a small key that only goes in the very end of the hub. I read that the 95 one has a different key than 97, which leads me to believe that the 95 one won't fit on my 97. Yeah, I can't find anywhere that sells threaded rod of any strength. Not even online.

For the guy who wrote above this, the hub I bought from thunder racing has a really big key made for it so it will work in high rpm cars or blower cars. I don't need that one if I find out a stock 95 hub will fit with no probs.

I can tell you my 94 has no key, I am running 95 timing cover now cause I changed to a vented opti. So the 94 an 95 are the same hub. I believe, that all LT1'a are a press fit hubs, and don't have a woodriff key. There is still a key way cut in the crank though, so you could put a hub that has it cut out for a key. Mostly supercharged guys use this, because the added power from the SC causes the hub to spin rather then the crank.

That's what I understand the keyed hub is for. I would think all the hus are the same. Does your balancer fit on both hubs? If so, go for it, put it on.

Good luck
Mike

I am having a hard time understanding so please bare with me. I think you are trying to say that all the LT1 Crankshafts have a keyway but the stock hubs don't. Right? Cause that is the way it is. My 1994 Z hub is just pressed on the crankshaft eventhough the crank has a keyway & I believe they all were pressed on on all the years. I have a custom made tool to re-install the hub if you are looking for one. Check out the pic in the link in my sig.

That's exactly what I am saying! I have been wrong before, but I believe they are all the same.

He kinda confused me. How about you? I think he is referring to the snout of the crank with the keyway as a hub..... but not to sure..
LOL!!!

What I gather from him is:

1) He has a 97 LT1
2) He bought a 95 keyed hub from Thunder racing
3) He doesn't want to use the Thunder Racing hub
4) He would like to know if a stock 95 hub will fit his 97 LT1

After doing some reading myself looks like the 96-97 LT1'a use a different Key(for the keyed hubs) Stock hub was just a press-fit. I BELIEVE the hub is the same, but do not know for sure.

Hell, who know's, maybe I am not understanding him either.

I meant that the LT1 motors in general I heard they had a tiny "butt" of a key at the end of the crankshaft and that the "butt" was longer on 97 models meaning if I bought a 95 hub it wouldn't fit. But I guess hundreds of people have done it with no problems. Yeah, I'm interested smokin 94z in that tool, but I only need the bolt. Is it grade 8??

pulling z, you are 100% correct in what I was asking, but don't forget this: I currently am finishing up the install of every mod in my sig plus about 20 that I didn't list, and I'm NOT taking off my timing cover again until I drop a 396 in, so all my questions are assuming the cover stays on.

I've been working on this diagram to try to help explain how things are.

From what I have gethered the 96-97 hubs are shorter than the 93-95 ones. I had a 96 hub on mine before and it stuck out too far and ate my belts to pieces. I put on a correct 95 hub and have had no problems so far.
