Cylinder sleeving...what all is involved?
Cylinder sleeving...what all is involved?
We finally pulled my engine last night and found a crack in the #7 cylinder. I have a decent amount of money in the block already (decked, line bored, clearanced for stroke, etc), so I'd rather not scrap it. I'm not too familiar at all with sleeving...what all is involved, and how much should I expect to have to pay to have it done?
Re: Cylinder sleeving...what all is involved?
The machine shop will need to cut the bore for the sleeve. Labor isn't too bad at $50-80 (per bore) but then you have to pay for a sleeve. I have no idea on what sleeves go for these days. I know shops that have experience sleeving and would be more than happy to give you a phone number or email so you can contact them. Just let me know.

Here is the crack...it's hard to see, but it's the black line next to the hairs. This is what caused the crack. Made quite a racket when it let go at 6500 RPMs.
Re: Cylinder sleeving...what all is involved?
The shop will set you straight on exact pricing. Steve Schmidt Racing Engines does alot of my machine work. Their website shows $60 for the machine work but that's not including the labor to install. Ryan says ~$110, so maybe you're looking at 50-80 for machine work and another ~$50 for install plus the price of the sleeve.
Good luck with it... hope you can salvage the block.
