Question Cyl. Head bolt torque specs

In the coming month, I am removing the heads from my LT1. I have done this before but I unfortunately forgotten the the torque spec for the head bolts. I have ARP head bolts already.

I am NOT looking for torque to yeild specs (in degrees).

I am looking for the ft. lbs. rating. It is in 3 steps. I have the pattern, I just forget the torque specs for each of the 3 stages. Anyone that has them, please post or where I can find them.

Re: Cyl. Head bolt torque specs

According to the instructions in the ARP head bolt box, aluminum heads are to be torqued to 60 ft. lbs. using ARP lube under the head and washer and ARP thread sealer on the threads.

Cehan has a good point, torque values change if you use ARP lube vs motor oil as a lube. You also want to chase the threads in the block so as not to get a false torque due to binding.

I go through all with 1 heavy grunt and factory sequence, then come back over all of them with 2 heavy grunts and factory sequence and never had a failure.

Sound familiar?

Use the manufacturers spec!!!!!!!!

See the link below for a heads/cam install procedure. It includes a drawing of the head bolt tightening order.

Re: Cyl. Head bolt torque specs

I Used ARP head studs and they speicfied 65. And the specs i gave were for stock head bolts. I missed the ARP part. Sorry about that. But do what the spec sheet says that came with your bolts. I always start with 25, 45 though.

Re: Cyl. Head bolt torque specs

My motor was a Nu-tek motor already assembled when i received it. I recall a similar torq spec i just didnt recall the actual spec. I did one head 2 years ago and not a issue with it all all. I used sealant and the supplied washers.

The stepped torque is the way. It is time consuming, but worth the effort.

I agree, especially with aluminum, if it isnt torqued in steps and the only time you can take a break is when one step is done. otherwise you can warp the head and it will never be right.
