Cutting off my muffler

My muffler has something broken off inside it, and rattles a lot. I was thinking about just cutting it off right at the point where the exhaust come into the muffler on the right side. I am going to be getting a catback soon anyways. Would be allright to drive it like this...by allright im not talking about sound cuz I love no muffler on my other car. I am just worried that the hot fumes could ignite the gas tank or something..

I would think you would be okay since alot of people dump their exhaust right over the axle and that is basically what you would be doing. Plus, the exhaust leaving the tailpipe isn't generally that hot.

If you left it like that for an extended period of time, then yes, I can see the chemicals REMOTELY/POSSIBLY (that is a big IF by the way) causing some kind of damage but I doubt it.

I drove around w/a cutout on my 93 for a while, but that was right before the axel, this would be after.

Yeah, and I think as long as it was angled down you would be okay. It's just like some of the Mustangs that come in to my shop. They have their exhaust "turned down" as one guy put it. It basically echoes off the pavement at idle for a meaner sound and directs the exhaust at another point than straight across the bottom side of your car which can be detrimental over an extended period of time.
