cutting to the chase...GM847 questions

Yes, I know it's been mentioned before. But I want to hear from people who've actually run the cam.

Something isn't right with my combo. Only running a 13.2 on street tires, still a little low to me. I have the parts so this winter I'm building a 383.

My question is driveability. My 224/230 starts making noticeable power around 2000 rpm, and up to about 6000. I have occasional surge under 2000 RPM. Makes about 23/24 mpg on the highway. I know I'm bound to take a hit. Anybody care to describe their powerband? From what I gather, the GM847 is slightly bigger than the cc306 but is more streetable...I dont want to go off the deep end since I drive this thing all over the place, in traffic, and back and forth between NC and FL. Will be like that for another year.

The 383 will be a 3.8" stroke std. bore engine, 11.5:1, LE heads, gm847, pacesetter longtubes. Looking for about 420 RWHP after I get an electric water pump and 58mm TB.

Also have seen conflicting specs online about the cam. Is it a 232/242/112 or a 234/242/112?

Also, would there be any advantage/disadvantage to running EGR or air injection with a cam of this size? I can get my longtubes either way...just wondering if it might cause a driveability issue.

Sorry for beating a dead horse, but I have only one shot at this for a year, and I dont want any regrets. After this motor all my car money for the year starts going toward a 12 bolt and driveshaft. I know the 383 will eat up some of the cam. Comments?

I would say you will make power 500-700 rpms later than what you are now, and will need to shift in the upper 6k's.

The cam is 234/242

In a 383 it will be fairly tame, in a 350 it worked great for me as a DD, but you will hear it loping. Surge was minimal, and got mid 20s with 4.33 gears on the highway

I like mine so far. Don't know the milage yet. With heads, pacesetter LTs, no emm., no cats; it is pretty radical to me. Mine lopes hard and is loud enough for my neighbors to complain (through a flowmaster). With the cut-out open it is very load! I don't drive it daily, but I don't see any reason why I couldn't. The biggest trouble I have with the setup is the headers hitting the floor board.

Why not just get a Joe O cam from Lloyd to run with your setup?

Re: cutting to the chase...GM847 questions

I've had mine running for about a week now and I couldn't be happier with it. I was running the XE 224/230 112 in a 355 and thought that was great, but this set up goes way beyond that. It has quite a bit of surge to it in my case and the lope is real nice. The surge will hopefully be resolved with some tuning tweeks. I like it and would recomend it.

I wanted to give the 847 a try. I've heard alot about it, it costs less than a custom, etc...I've considered a custom, but everywhere I go they dont want to disclose the specs to me before I buy...something I dont feel comfortable with. I'm far from a cam designer but it does give me a better idea if I'm going to like the cam or not.
