Cutouts Dangerous
I have seen pictures of people installing cutouts after the cat, yet in front of the rear axle, on LT1's. In a few of the pictures it looks like the hot exhaust gases have TOASTED the bottom of the cars REALLY badly. I still think I want to use this location because of the great ground clearance it would provide, but I just wanted to know if extensive use of the cutout would be a hazard.
No thats not burns you see, thats just carbon deposit, go back there with a rag & it looks like new, by the time the exhaust gasses come out of the cut-out they are just warm not hot, mine after a year was real black, I took a cloth to it & it looks like new
Mine would have blown up a long time ago. You can see all the black spots from my different stages of exhaust. First I cut off the stock muffler under the rear and it went like that for a couple months, then I went open stock ypipe, then open hooker LTs, then open Mufflex ypipe. And now the cutout under the pass rear seat.
Alright, that makes sense. I almost forgot to mention that the actual cutout itself in some pictures was orange...rust maybe? Does everyone's turn orange after a while? Thanks for the quick response guys!
I dont think a cutout will ever get hot enough to turn orange. Unless the car is running wrong the headers shouldn't even be orange. The only way it would maybe be possible is if the cutout was mounted to the header at the collector and the car was running terrible. Even then I almost doubt it would get that hot.

Sorry I wasn't specific enough. The cutout isn't glowing orange from the heat, I was talking about when the car is off...It looks like orange corrosion.

One way to fix the carbon problem is to turn the cutout towards the ground a little.
Re: Cutouts Dangerous
How are cutouts installed? I have my cat back system welded, and I need to know if they need to cut it and reweld it to put the cut out in. How much would this cost roughly? And you guys say put it before the over axle pipe?
